This summer I wanted to plant  a garden and plant things that would be ok for my buns to eat. I am planning on planting some veggies as well as some herbs and i would really like to plant some flowers as well i heard roses are ok for them to eat.

Good idea! Definitely plant some lettuce – and this week I planted some little seeds of basil and parsley plants. If you are going to sprout some seeds this time of year, just keep them inside near a window so that they can stay warm but also get some sun. Also, I found out that those square plastic containers (like the ones that lettuce and spinach come in sometimes) are good for sprouting seeds. Just poke a few holes in the bottom of the cage, and then put the lid on and it creates a bit of a greenhouse effect!

              Oh great idea!

I actually just moved into a town home this past Saturday. And there is a big patio with a tall private fence all the way around. And it has a flower bed area in the ground that is just weeds, dirt and rocks right now. It’s about 10-12ft long x 4 ft wide. I’m thinking a big herb aromatic area that is safe for if the bunnies happen to get into it. I’ll be supervising their time outside, but want it to be safe as well.

Are there any herbs that are not good for them? Just want to make sure I stay away from those.

I’m trying this too.  I have a condo with a VERY sunny back deck (southern and eastern exposures) and I’m planning window boxes on the railing, hanging plants, and a couple of largeish planters on the ground.  I have a hanging chair so I’ll be able to sit out in my “garden”.

Right now I’m thinking of mostly herbs and leafies – stuff that either Pepper or I can eat/use.  For herbs, I’m going with mints, rosemary, and lavender, with spinach and a lettuce mix for greens.  For fun I’m getting some rainbow carrots and marigolds, and I got some free luffa seeds so i’ll try that as well.  I’m a bit worried about the greens, as the timing of sprouting and planting to get a continuous crop is a bit intimidating.  But I’m getting the herbs as plants and have picked fairly indestructible ones so I’m pretty sure they’ll survive.

I’m thinking of doing this too…Unfortunately I can’t/am not allowed to grow them outdoors, and indoors is very dry…I’ll just have to keep them moist somehow

I’m thinking of trying some parsley, lettuce and carrots…Maybe some other fresh herbs like mint too

I’m with Wendy on the continuous cropping=Intimidating! I’ve planted some romaine, parsley and orchard grass. So far nothing is happening! I get real impatient for it all to grow, then when it is, I forget to water it. One really easy thing to do is grow carrot tops. You cut of top inch of a carrot, put it in a saucer of water and the top starts to sprout. They can grow into a good size little plant. You can grow this indoors just on a window sill.

I got so excited about my little plot of dirt right along the fence that I went out and bought a bunch of seed packets and a few window sill greenhouse germinators.

I got home, looked at my dirt spot, and realized there is no way this is going to work. This flowerbed area is on the north facing side of a 6 ft private fence. It’ll be mainly shade except midday – even in Texas. I look at my seed packets and they all say full sun. Boo on a herb garden! I’m gonna sulk for a while about it, i guess. I might keep a few for pots that I can move to the sun.

Well, I guess I need to go with shady stuff, dark greens, cool ground cover, and rich color flowers. I can do this, no big deal. But now this wouldn’t be for the rabbits at all, I guess. But still want to make sure I’m not going to load it up with poisonous plants. Is there a list of plants to avoid? I have a cat and dog too.

Check thread in DIET AND CARE labelled Safe Houseplants. Scarlet Rose posted some good links there re toxic/non toxic plants.

                            Thanks Jerseygirl!

Also, I really use the BB bunny-safe veggie list for my guidelines when I go to plant a garden:

                            https://binkybunny.com/Default.aspx?tabid=144

I also suggest the following veggies which are fairly easy to grow (be sure to use compost):

                            carrots (mini)

                            lettuce (mixed)

                            parsely

                            cilantro

                            basil

I am very excited for spring this year. I am going to plant lots of stuff out on my giant balcony/deck.

There is one thing about my balcony that sucks though. Most of it has a solid wall/railing around it but on the sides there is a few feet on both ends that is metal and pretty open. Like a metal railing with many verticle bars. It makes my deck less private for one, and also is unsafe for bunny.
Ok so my plan is to attach some wire fencing to it and grow vines up it for privacy.
I need some bunny safe vines though.. hmmm. Do any of you know of a sturdy vine that is not poisonous to buns?

                                I can has seeds!

I know it’s too early to plant anything – we had snow flurries yesterday – but now I have my starting-kit-trays and a couple of tiny packets of seeds.  I have some actual plants (lavender, mints, rosemary) coming later.

                                I picked out:

Rainbow Blend Carrots – Cosmic Purple, Solar Yellow, Lunar White and Atomic Red

                                Tangy Mesclun Mix

                                Rainbow Baby Greens

                                and Vital Green Spinach

Someone also gave me some Aster seeds to try, and I have the marigold and luffa already.

Those are “Rainbow Blend Carrots” from Gurneys.  http://gurneys.com/product.asp?pn=73512

“Purple has smooth skin and coreless orange flesh which is very sweet and tasty—especially striking when sliced. Yellow holds its bright sunny hue inside and out, is extra crunchy and juicy and has a wonderfully refreshing sweet flavor. White is very mild and delicious and Red has very high lycopene levels as well as a crispy texture that is great cooked.”

i planted a garden recently for the buns but i was wondering if i could use preditory insects to kill off any problematic pests? because i know not to use pesticides……i already use preditory mites to be rid of reptile mites so i thought that the concept would stand for a garden. any thoughts would be appreciated.
