I was at the local farm supply store and noticed they had some interesting horse treats. They looked like something my bunnies would enjoy so I bought a small sample bag for $2! The ingredients seem bunny safe to me, but I’d like to get others opinions to make sure I’m not putting my buns in harm! I broke off a very small piece and gave one to each of my 3 buns – to see if they’d even be interested in them and they were devoured in seconds!!

They’re made by the company Ginger Ridge and the ingredients are:

Whole wheat flour, wheat germ meal, corn germ meal, beet molasses, vegetable oil, sea salt, carrots, green cabbage, luzerne hay, natural flavor.

        Analysis:

        crude protein…. 8.4%

        crude fat…. 6.0%

        crude fiber…. 12.0%

        moisture… 9.8%

        Thanks for the input!!

hmm no seeds and dried junk in it.   Sounds to be ok.   The fat content is a little high though.  In little pieces I think it would be fine as a treat now n then.

I am not sure I would give these to a bunny unless you can find out how much molasses (sugar) is in them.  Horses can handle higher amounts of sugar than bunnies can.

You can actually make your own bunny cookie treats. The benefit to this is that you know exactly what is in it and in what amounts. You can make it out of ground up bunny pellets, so as long as your bun is getting a healthy pellet, the cookies will be healthy in moderation.

              From the BinkyBunny FAQ section:

Cookies/Treats (home made for your rabbit):

I do not like the wheat germ meal, corn germ meal, molasses, green cabbage, lucerne hay or the “natural flavor” for the following reasons:

Corn germ meal – Rabbits should not have corn, it has too much sugar, can throw off a bunny GI tract and is high in starch which could cause stasis.

molasses – Again sugar, can throw off a bunny GI tract.

Green cabbage – Has a tendency to cause stomach upset and gas.

Lucerne hay – Alfalfa hay which is O.K. as a treat but must watch if you are watching your rabbits calcium intake and/or weight.

Natural flavor – This term is so vague, it could be anything – even something harmful for your rabbit.

What I would suggest is writing the company, asking more specifics about their product. Like what are those “natural flavors?” Most place will not disclose that as it is a “secret.” I would opt for making my own cookies or take a look at the BB store, American Pet Diner or Oxbow web sites for treats.
