Currently I’m working at a livestock/pet feed & supplies store. I hate it. The only perk is that I get a discount on pet and horse stuff…

But anyway, I’m majoring in Psychology and a while back I applied for a FT position at an Autism Intervention Centre here in town, working with youth up to 5 yo and their parents/guardians who have autism. I unfortunately submitted my resume a few days too late for their deadline, but my friend who works there PT said they do regularly hire.

Anyway, I got a call yesterday for an interview. EEEEEEEEEKKKKK. I’m SO sick right now as well – congested cough and sound like a man  when I talk, plus no energy – I’m taking a sick day today from my current job.

Anyway, I am so nervous of the interview tomorrow. So nervous. Because this would be a M-F 8-5 kind of job, exactly what I want…I’m just honestly kind of scared…like, of kids having temper tantrums or getting freaked out…

Any words of advice? Should I apologize for being sick? Should I still shake her hand despite the fact I’m clearly sick??

         Help….!

oh Lion Lop I’m so happy about your interview. If you think you’re contagious, maybe you could call her and be honest, that you really want to interview, but you don’t want to spread your illness, and maybe you can reschedule without being penalized. To be truthful, if I were interviewing I wouldn’t want some one obviously sick coming in, and I wouldn’t punish them for not coming either. It would show consideration for other employees. I hope you get to feeling better quick!

I think that kralspace makes a good point. I would definitely call, but make it seem you are calling more for their benefit than for yours. Tell them that you are very excited about the interview, but that you are very very sick, and you would understand if they wished to push back the interview a few more days. As for the kids, I have several friends who are currently working towards their Ph.D. in psychology. One of them is specializing in autism. The kids do freak out sometimes she says (I get to hear all the about “the crazies” from my psych friends), but she loves her work very much and says that it is highly rewarding.

Wise advice! I would be the same as Lion Lop, all nervous and unsure what to do, but what they’ve said makes sense. LL, I’m sure they’ll know you’re human and they just approached you at a bad time. Besides, if you’re sick, you may not present as your best anyway. Hard to be on the ball and enthusiatics sounding when your head wants to explode!

Anyway, for when ever the interview does take place – all the best!
