        hi guys

im really worried at the moment because hershey is being really weird, she is in a bun loaf position in her house and won’t come out, the thing that’s making me worried is that she’s rejecting any kind of food i offer her. even banana which is the one she goes crazy for and jumps all over me.

i haven’t seen her all day so i don;t know what she was like during the day but she has not come out since we got home and just stays in one position.

she has definitely eaten all the food we gave her this morning…

i don’t know what’s wrong, wish she could talk

Hi naz. Have you noticed whether she has used her litter box much today?

I don’t know if you have seen this before.  It is a thread from the FAQ section on GI Stasis.

            https://www.binkybunny.com/Default.aspx

Try give Hersey a stomach massage to get the GI tract moving.  Maybe offer some smithecone too – infant gas drops.  I have seen these in supermarkets here in Oz.  In the baby section, yellow box – sorry cannot remember the name. It has smithecone listed as main ingredient.  Also try give her some fragrant greens.  If she is not pooping and hasn’t eaten since this morning, be prepared to take her to a vet.  She may need some motility drugs.

thanks jerseygirl, we went out and bought some of that smithecone stuff but could not make her take it. i drizzled some on her food and that’s all i could do..sigh. she had a little nibble of a carrot top and one of her treats. we just refreshed her litter and theres a few poops in there but not many.

tried to massage as well but she didn’t like it.

so we will be taking her to the vet tomorrow most likely.

You may be able to try again with the smithecone later. For a 20mg/ml suspension, you can give 1-2 mls every hour but after a 3rd dose, you should cut back to 1 ml every three to eight hours.  Does the smithe have a dropper?  You could try putting it in the side of her mouth and slowly let it  in.  Then its more likely not to shoot down her throat.  She may even sort of lap at it.   Maybe leave a small bowl of greens she likes nearby and observe from a distance. Be sure to keep her warm also. Hope she comes good soon. They get us so worried sometimes!

It sounds like it might just be a bit of gas. With the simethecone drops, I actually give them by mouth. If you put it on food and wait for the bun to eat it, they almost never will. The drops work about half the time, and usually they work pretty quickly. Another good thing, it’s not possible to overdose a bunny on them, so don’t worry if a bit more gets in when you’re trying to give them. If she’s not pooping and eating normally shortly (or i guess tomorrow morning in AUS) I would recommend she go see the vet.

                    {{Hershey}}

I’d plan on the vet tomorrow just in case. Giving semethicone by mouth is pretty easy, maybe get someone to help you hold her. If you just poke the dropper in her mouth and get most of it in, she will likely lick up the rest. (and just poke inside the cheek-no need to try to force it down the throat!!)

                    Keep us posted!!

hi guys, thanks for your advice ..this morning hershey was alot better and back to her active self… i gave her lots of veges and hay and she was gobbling it up, so it looks like she is feeling better. i tried to give her more of the smithecone but she really hates it! she will have none of it.

anyway i was really worried there for a while …how can i be more prepared for this in the future?

how can i be more prepared for this in the future?

Have a read through the link I pasted in post above. It’ll point you to other info on managing this.

                        Also:- http://www.mybunny.org/info/gi_stasis.htm

Good to have the smithe on hand if she has future gas episodes. Gas is often a precursor to GI Stasis.

Also, try identify what may have caused this.  Gas causing veggie, dehydration, hair or foriegn particle ingestion…

hi jerseygirl, thanks for all of that info, very useful!

i have another question…in those articles it says that stringy hair poop is a sign of gi stasis….well hershey just pooped stringy hair (for the 1st time, all her other poops have been normal), so i guess the cause is hair since she is shedding. but since she has pooped it out…does that mean that the problem is out of her tummy now? i don’t know what to do next.

she is eating normally now as far as i can see…

                            Hi naz

I read that too, but elsewhere, I’ve also read it’s a good thing to see it as it means it’s coming out. That’s my thoughts on it too. I see it with Jersey during normal times (no stasis or shedding). I guess you can try up the fibre in Hersheys diet. Try a different more fragrant hay to entice her to eat more. Extra wet greens to keep her hydrated, so that the bowel contents keep hydrated also. Glad to hear little chocolate bunny is eating again!

I am convinced that it is not bad to see some poos strung by hair- rabbits groom themselves too much that it is impossible for them not to ingest some hair.  And it only makes that it is good to see some of the hair passing and creating these poos.  Otherwise the hair would be staying in the stomach or intestines- which would not be good.

I agree-I’ve read that when their is a hairball blockage in GI Stasis, it’s believed that dehydration and stasis caused the hairball to stop moving, not that the hair ball caused the stasis. It’s always a good idea to brush more when their shedding, and adding more hay and fresh pineapple or papaya can’t hurt

oh man, this is happening again! :[

we have given her some smithecone by mouth…we got her into a burrito so easily because she doesn’t even want to move…right now she’s lying in the lounge (not her house) in a stretched out position..but not moving.

she ate her food this morning and has been eating pellets through out the day. i think it started this afternoon sometime…i didn’t really notice because when i’m home during the day she is always sleeping in her house or next to the fireplace…i only realised she was sick after dinner when she wouldn’t come out and started grinding her teeth again.

sigh. i feel like i’m not taking care of her..but i try to do everything i can! i don’t understand.

Is she still grinding her teeth? She may have had gas earlier and has been able to relieve it herself. So if you get down with her now does she come up to you? Or does she just lie there. Does she seem listless? That she’s not moving even when you went to wrap her in a towel is worrisome. Do you have an emergency care option?

Don’t be hard on yourself, they are fragile creatures and can fall ill suddenly despite the care we give them. Please seek some vet care if she is not responding to you.

I really think that you need to get her to a vet – the simethicone is obviously not the answer.

hello, she is now moving around and back in her house. i saw her eat a tiny bit of hay and she was drinking water from her bowl like she was really thirsty. i’ve never seen her drink so much from the bowl. it’s after midnight here, so i will have to wait until the morning to take her to our vet…but hopefully she will get better through the night. :\

Good to hear. Maybe take some notes around the times this happens so you can identify a possible cause.

I’m glad to hear she is doing better again – what kind of veg are you giving her? It sounds like something in her diet could be giving her gas so I would recommend sticking with the normal veg like romaine, parsley, or red/green leaf lettuce until you can figure out what is going on. Also, keeping a close eye on her eating and pooping habits, like you are now, is a good idea to make sure that if she continues to have these episodes you can get her to a vet.

she eats bok choy, parsley, coriander regularly and i add either mint, basil, celery or carrot tops from week to week. she is shedding a lot as well..but she hates to get brushed.

thanks for your support through this… i hope it doesn;t happen again anytime soon.

So have I got this right? She was in her house grinding teeth and you put her in burrito and gave smithecone. Then she was out and stretched out in the lounge area? But she hadn’t eaten her veggies? Does she get them at any other point in the day? It does sound like gas or some sort of tummy upset. Bok choy can cause gas for some, so be careful with that. Romaine(cos lettuce) or endive are pretty good and last well in the fridge.

A good way to get some of the excess hair off her is run damp hands over her. She’ll think she’s being pet. You can try pluck some out too if she’ll let you. For a vet visit, they may palpitate the stomach or do an x-ray to look for air pockets. Also, get teeth checked, possibly her temperature too.(?)
