I believe that I’ve mentioned in previous posts that my cat, Thomas has started being a little bunny-like, including eating hay and doing little mini-binkies.  They’re getting along really well.  The other day, Thomas was loafing on the bed when Chloe decided she wanted to be on the other side.  She hopped right over him, and he just grimaced at her, instead of slapping at her with a paw, like I expected.  It’s gotten to the point that when I enter the room, Thomas runs over to Chloe’s cage and rubs on it while waiting for me to open it!

Well, the other day I had Chloe out, and Thomas turned his head toward her.  I tensed, waiting for him to get rough, always a worry though he hasn’t yet.  She dropped her head, and Thomas groomed her.  Just a couple of licks, but he still did it.  My rabbit is dominant to my cat.

Is this just my weird pets?  Or has anyone else ever had something like this happen to them?

Not me, but a friend of mine has 2 cats and a french lop and they squabble like siblings.  The rabbit pees in their litterbox to show his dominance, and one of the cats goes in the rabbit’s open cage, lies on a shelf, and pokes the bun from above – just like kids in bunk beds!  The other cat is more delicate and the rabbit seems to know to be gentler to her (though he does steal her window-watching pillow on occasion).

We have three cats, along with our Lily bunny.  Our oldest cat loves anything and everyone.  He isn’t phased by her at all.  Our only female cat, Phoebe, usually has a big attitude- surprisingly she hasn’t even hissed at Lily!!  Lily runs right up to her to sniff her and Phoebe bolts, but shows no aggression.  Our youngest cat, Oliver- now he has a crush on Lily I think!!  He sleeps on top of her cage on a blanket.  He also lays up there watching her, pawing at her from above.  When’s she roaming free, he follows her every move.  She doesn’t seem to mind.  Sometimes Lily chases him too    They are very entertaining to watch.  Oh, and Oliver loves eating Lily’s treats and hay….naughty kitty!!!

My buns get pretty well with my cats.  Cotton, our first bunny was 12 weeks only when we brought her home and she has developed a dominant personality and likes to bully the cats sometimes.  She nipped one cat on the nose about 2 weeks ago and left a little scrape- because she did not want to share the same chair to sleep on.  The cats don’t seem to mind Cotton- but they are wary of her- sometimes she is nice to them and sometimes she pushes them around.

Penny and Schroeder both came into the house as adults and in general don’t have such a dominant, diva personality and the cats seem to like them better- though the buns don’t really seek their attention.

The cats love to get into the bunny runs and cages when they are open- I am not sure why really, but they are attracted to them the instant the door is open and bunny is out- *poof* instant cat in the way.  Now I can see why the dogs are interested in getting in- any poos and pellets are devoured if possible.

EDIT:  I think it would be a rare instance that you would get a true BOND between a cat and rabbit- by bond I mean like a pair of bonded rabbits that view the other as a mate and companion and are not separated.

I don’t have cats (yet!! Be afraid Dave….) but when Dave’s mom looked after Kokanee, they played together (complete with kokanee chasing the cat around, and cat sleeping beside the cage the whole time she was there).

http://www.rabbit.org/journal/2-11/cats-and-rabbits.html this is a great article on cats and bunnies

I would continue to be cautious. The cat can scratch or bite the bunny, the bunny can bite or kick the cat. So… just be careful. Like Katnip said, I don’t believe you will get a true bond betw/ a cat and bun b/c they speak different languages. Also cats are naturally predators, buns are naturally prey (altho those lines are sometimes blurred in a house-pet setting). Make sure the bun and cat each have places they can escape to if needed.

Yes, I’m careful when they’re together. And they have their spots; the bunny can hide under my desk and Thomas on top of the desk or my headboard. Plus, Chloe is afraid to leave my room, so Thomas can run out of the room if he wants. But thanks for your concern.

I was just working on my computer and realized that I hadn’t heard from “the girls” (my cat and bun) for awhile.  I looked around saw the cat and.. doubletake… there was Diego Rabbit in a deep snooze flopped out beside her!   I’d never trust them alone, but otherwise they really have a great time together!  My cat likes to have a small friend and the rabbit likes to have someone to play hide-n-seek with.  Soo cute!  I can’t believe I actually got a pic!

oh and  just because its funny to see a bunny in a party hat

My cat Oliver and Lily get along fabulously, but… I’ve NEVER seen them lay together- a Kodak moment for sure! Thanks for sharing

Coco and LaChatte have not yet gotten cozy – but they tolerate each other. They will even sleep on my bed at the same time, and we have seen a couple of licks/nose touches.

They do seem to play – and by that I mean that La Chatte will instigate a “chase” and Coco will run to her hiding place. But the cat doesn’t pursue and Coco never thumps her displeasure, so I assume that this is something they have worked out between them. I think I supposed that if Coco really hated it she would give some mighty thumps to let everyone know.
