Okay, I know I posted about this once before, but I don’t think I could find it in all the masses of posts since then, so please bear with me…

If a bunny is fed guinea pig pellets…would that be bad?

Because due to my lack of focus, apparently I was feeding guinea pig pellets to all my bunnies for..oh…about the last week and a half or so….

You know…for the length of time Mimzy has not been feeling well?? (smacks head on keyboard several times)

I feel SO stupid. And angry. And I think the hubby is going to lose a few teeth. (he brought the pellets home last time)

Can this cause any permanent damage to the bunnies? (I stopped feeding them to Mimzy the other night, when he had another sneezing fit after eating them.)

Thank you. (please feel free to beat me senseless for being an idiot) >_<

Bugger! Oh MM, you had so much on your mind though. Only thing I know of is the vitamins, think g.pigs need a lot of Vit C. Was it one of those pellets supposedly ok for g.pigs and rabbits?

Well, it’s the Kaytee Timothy Complete brand of guinea pig food. That’s what the bag says…

And in REALLY big letters so that I couldn’t possibly miss it…but I did. ~_~ It does say something about extra Vitamin C…do bunneis throw that off as easily as we do?

I guess the random sunflower seed should’ve tipped me off.

I’m suprised you didn’t get poopy butt from all 3 – just what you’d need. I don’t really know about the effects. I guess try give them extra wet greens or ones that hold a lot of water. Up their intake to flush the system…..(?)

Edit: Also, the sugar may vary.  If you can, put them on hay and veg diet for a few days.  You may be able to reintroduce the new pellets (Oxbow organic etc) after all one this other stuff has left their systems.

Edit2: The ingredient listings are nearly the same and being tim hay based, I think if you were going to accident;y feed them g.pig food, this’d be the one to feed!

What I read when I owned piggies and no rabbits, the only difference is that vit. C is added (and is gone in ninety days after opening the pellets-piggies need the C as they develop scruvey easily) so I wouldn’t think they’d be a problem at all. BUT for sure I don’t know Just my thoughts.

Well, after two days of NO MORE piggie pellets…lots of fresh greens and water, and a minimal amount of Oxbow Basic T each night, I’ve only heard Mimzy sneeze once and that was because he’d just hopped into the litter box (the litter does tend to dust up a bit when he gets in)…nothing like the serial sneezing and nose pointing he was doing before. Also, he had seemed to be uncomfortable in his tummy (there were smaller poops in his box, but nothing seriously unusual) and now he seems brighter and more active and is coming to me for extra noserubs in the mornings and his potty habits seem to be improving!

I think we may have our culprit! (Keep your fingers crossed!)

For those of you following the other thread about Mimzy’s breathing problems…I got a response from Dana and it relieves me quite a bit. I’ll go post my question and her answer in the other thread in Q & A.

Thank you everyone for hanging in there with me during this confusing time! I am about doing a jig hoping the misery is possibly over now! ^_^

                    Hi, MM,
I just checked your other post, and didn’t realize this post was by you when I looked earlier tonight. This is excellent news. I know I felt the pellets would be a good option to change due to possible allergies, so in a way, that was a good guess. We can definitely say he’s allergic to piggie pellets!

It really is a relief, and don’t be hard on your and hubby because at the time you bought and fed them, you were just getting Shadow back from his emergency and he was all shaved skin and you were all stressed. Mimzy was just trying to speak bunny-style, by sneezing.

And jerseygirl’s right – now you can do nasal cultures instead of blood tests if he sneezes again. Don’t invite any piggies over for lunch anytime soon though. He might need to bring a hanky.
