I was reading this article in the newspaper yesterday and got really angry :

Minister not guilty of killing five dogs – timestranscript.canadaeast.com/search/article/561126

To sum up the article, a minister had 6 small dogs (Pomeranians) he kept in a kennel which were to be seized by the spca because he was not providing adequate care. So this guy, fearing what would become of his “babies”, decides to kill them all with a hammer. 5 were killed and 1 survived despite a fractured skull. He goes to court and is found guilty of three counts of failing to provide adequate water for the animals and one count of injuring a dog under the Criminal Code.

The law in Canada states “animals are the property of the owner and that person may dispose of said property providing that it’s not done for an illegal purpose or doesn’t contravene any law.”  That’s pretty sick. Animals are just property according to the law, because they have a monetary value.

The Judge stated “…The killing of the dogs by the defendant in the manner he did, even though it was not in accordance with the accepted euthanasia guidelines, did not cause the five dogs unecessary pain and suffering….as owner of the animals, he had the right to destroy them.

Hmmm… me thinks the Judge wasn’t a dog owner. This law needs to be changed. You can bludgeon your pet to death all you want because it’s your property. That’s really looking out for animals.

wow! that is so ridiculously, idioticly the most cowerdly thing ive ever read about a person, that person should be charged with murder! that makes me so mad when people think that people can do anything they like to animals like abuse them or neglect them or anything. if people want to have an animal the should be an educated, responsible caring, loving person not some arse who thinks he can kill his poor dogs because he doesn’t want to give them up to a better place, he should be the one getting smashed in the head with a hammer!

          (sorry for my anger )

It makes me sick to hear about stuff like that. Its seriously so horrable. Those poor dogs… I dont know how anyone could do that to any animal, let alone one you took care of. I hate how goverment sees animals as proporty. They are not our proporty, they are individuals that we care for.
We are animals ourselfs, looking after a weaker species.

Oh and any and all that are interested

If something local happened near you, or you hear of something terrible you want to follow up on, this is agreat site

                http://www.pet-abuse.com

You can follow the case, it’s updated all the time -keeps records of sentances, peoples names (if released), news releases

If you want to follow a case you can sign up for email updates. You can also search a database of convicted abusers. I wouldn’t recommend just browsing the stories -it’s upsetting.

I’d like to know why the judge thinks that the dogs did not have pain and suffering caused to the blow on the head by a hammer…that does not make sense at all and it’s surely not humane.

My thoughts exactly. I highly doubt they did autopsies on the dogs to see if they were killed with just one blow. I’d like to know if the surviving dog was euthanized, but it didn’t say.
