Oh my gosh, our local paper here in Edmonton has contacted me-they want to do a story on Hoppy Endings Rabbit Rescue!!![]()
![]()
I’m so excited-and soooo nervous (those of you who’ve met me-know I’m shy!! LOL)![]()
Gasp!! ![]()
Congrats, Lesley! That’s great news! HERR definitely deserves the recognition. And no worries, you’ll do GREAT ![]()
Hooray! You deserve it with all the hard (and good) work you guys do! Congrats!
YAY! it is so nice to see your community recognizing all your hard work!
see if they will mention your spa services and what you donate the proceeds to!
Wow that’s great! Congrats!
I’m also very shy too, but once you begin talking about rabbits, you are so wrapped up in it, you forget that there is even other people around you.
That’s awesome! You’ll have a chance to get the word out and will probably lead to donations.
I agree with Markusdark, I’m very shy too but when I talk about rabbits and horses, I just can’t shut up!
Is the paper going to interview you. That’s pretty freakin exciting.
This is great exposure! Good luck!
WooHoo!!!! Fantastic!
It may help to keep a small bulleted list with you of points you want to be sure to make. Have a business card or paper ready with your name, address, phone, email and website address ready to give the reporter. Helps them spell it all correctly and avoid misprints. Can email the reporter with same to allow them to cut & paste. Nothing worse than a newpaper misprint of a website. Also write down your open hours, or policy if you’re by appointment only.
If you jot down a paragraph of your own bio background with it, you give the reporter those facts too, and then you can talk about bunnies more in person.
Make a note about wanting to accept donations in money; what items you need (a wish list) donated; and how you go about receiving bunnies.
The more you have your own needs, policies, and facts handy and in writing for both of you, the less you will rely on your memory when you’re nervous and get to that hand-slaps-head moment after the interview when you realize what you forgot to say. Then bring a lap bunny to pet while talking. Good photo op.
Thanks all!! Pam your soooo helpful!! Great idea! I’m on it
Yes, they are coming to the shelter this evening (strait after work) to interview.
I just did a big intake of carpet rolls last night (all my bunnies get carpeting now
Yeah for volutneers!!) and I was at the shelter until after twelve making sure everything was perfect (and probably driving Nanci crazy because the dogs would get barking if I banged anything, then the roosters start crowing, then the pigs start oinking LOL )
I guess no matter what, if we get in the paper that’s really good news!! ![]()
OH boy thats just great. Let us know how it went. I wish we in florida could see it too. Oh boy I dont’ think you will be shy on the subjects of rabbits. You will do great. ![]()
Lots of good pointers have been posted for you too. Wow stuff I would never think of. ![]()
Which paper is it Lesley? I’ll make sure I get one! ![]()
K&K,
Most newspapers have a website, so when the article comes out you (or I) can look it up and post a link to it online.
When you’re famous, can we say we knew you when? ![]()
LOL Pam
xParadise-it’s the journal -I’m going to ask her tonight when/if it’s published what day?
Eeeeppp-four hours….
I was just going to ask you what time. Make that 2 hrs…..
Hope it went well!
ZOMG!! It was three hours!! *Jaw-floor* But I think it went great! She was very kind, had done a lot of research ahead of time, had a bunch of questions to ask (I basically said after the intros that I’ve never done anything like this-interview-before so I’d just follow her lead)-she recorded and took notes, asked tons of questions-about the shelter, rabbits, rabbit care, welfare, ferral rabbit prob in Edmonton and me.
It went very smooth, I was definitely nervous ( I had my nervous ton of voice
) but I didn’t lose my train of thought or forget anything (THANKS rabbitpam for the suggestion on bringing notes on stats!!)
She had questions about other shelters and I think I handled them well-you never want to say anything bad about another shelter (no matter what) in my humble opinion, as a shelter because you could really burn bridges or hurt your image-no matter if you have diff policies/visions or ways of doing things. So it was important to me that when those questions came up I didn’t say anything that could be interpreted wrong!
AND
(omg my nerves can’t take anymore!!) their camera crew is coming tomorrow for a photoshoot!!
Tomorrow, after all this is over, I’m having some wine!!
LOL – 3 hours and they haven’t done photos yet?! Oh well, hang tight & well done so far!
That’s awesome they are gonna take pics! Tell all the bunnies to look very sad (Bindi style) so peeps will get out their check books and help the shelter.
That’s terrific!
So glad I could help a little.
Camera crew is great – because you’ll get people who see their pix and want to adopt. Be sure to have your adoption screening requirements ready because it will be like Easter, the “oooo, I want that cute little bunny!” You don’t want any coming back.
This couldn’t happen to a nicer person. Remember my prediction: future pres. of House Rabbit Society. ![]()
Did you find you when it’s going to be published?
OK so it’s going in tomorrows journal!!
The photoshoot went well and I’m excited! Nanci pointed out, smartly, that I needed to get my butt in gear and get our paypal up on our website! So hopefully the story brings us some volunteers and adopters and not too many surrenders!! I had a big day at the vets too-new post!
What’s their website, if there is one?
It’s http://www.edmontonjournal.com/ I’ll scan it and post it too!! (Ok unless it’s terrible and/or the pictures of me look really bad LOL
)
Just remember that you are doing it for the rabbits and by getting the word out greatly helps all rescue centers. You will be fine.

Got it!
*does binkies*
Fabulous story!!! Hopefully you can maybe get some more volunteers out of it, and maybe use it for getting some financial sponsors too. Have you considered approaching one of the pellet manufacturers to see if they’ll donate X amount of pellets to you a year?

Scooter here. Very nice story, very nice photo. Be interesting to see what results of it!
Wonderful article, beautiful picture, but most of all, a beautiful & wonderful thing you are doing with your rescue.
I think I’ve said this before, but I admire you.
Reading about the early makings of your rescue is one of the things that influenced me to open my home to another bun.
Can’t wait to hear about all the good this article will bring!
Awwww THANKS everybun!!! I was a little disappointed that they didn’t focus on rabbit/rabbit issues that much-we talked about it a lot during the interview-but I guess their is no bad publicity!! I gave the website and it wasn’t posted-and they spelled Nanci’s name wrong (How hard is Nanci Cook?? LOL
) But fingerscrossed!!
You look beautiful. The story is nice, I like the way you mentioned (and they included) that bunnies are hard work to look after and should be desexed. A nice upbeat story, and no publicity is bad publicity.
and once again, you look beautiful.
Awww thanks everyone
SUCH sweet things to say!! Honestly it was so stressful to go through it-but I already have emails from people about volunteering, we were at a function tonight and I got a ” I saw you in the paper today!” So really raising awareness-it’s awesome!! Despite a couple of little mistakes in the article I think it’s great stuff and will do us a world of good!!! I’m definitely exited and really thank you all for your suport!!
I think I’d collapse with out my BB people helping me!!!
Thanks again!! My support pillars!!
Congratulations ![]()
K&K: Scooter here. In my admittedly meager experience with the press, it’s not at all uncommon for minor errors to crop up in articles, and for them not to focus on the things that you think are most important. Reporters are trying to synthesize a lot of information into a very short amount of space that the average reader can understand. Nor do are they necessarily knowledgeable about the topic of interest. And of course, many of them have their own agendas, which aren’t necessarily yours either.
It’s a very good idea to record any interview with the popular media for these reasons. I keep a pocket-sized digital voice recorder with me; given my line of work, I wind up dealing with the press every so often, and I want to ensure that they have it right. No reporter worth his/her salt will object to this…in fact, they may record it themselves to make sure they have it right.
I just read the article. Great work!
Thanks all. She did record which is why I’m a little sorely LOL’ing
No worries though-we had a vet and a vet tech offer to volunteer!!! OMG awesome!
