        Hey guys!

I just wanted to get your opinion on this. I am thinking about switching from Yesterday’s News to wood pellets for my bunnies litter boxes. With 2 rabbits we are really going through litter a lot faster. I have read mixed responses online about the wood pellets. Does anyone here use them ? Are they safe for the buns ? Are they as absorbent as Yesterday’s News ??

        Thanks!

I really like them. The ones I use degrade into a powder when wet, and to clean the box, I shake it sideways and then it all dumps cleanly. Then I just have to wipe the last bits out and it’s clean. Bruno disagrees, of course – I have to use his old litter, a paper-variant, on top of the pellets so he’ll use the box. Wouldn’t want to make anything easy.

Totally safe, just make sure you are getting the kind with no ‘accelerant’ or chemicals added (most are plain)

The only drawback I’ve noticed is they don’t come out of the litter pan as easy when they are wet, but that’s no big deal. And they are waaaaay cheaper

If you’re having trouble with them comign out, put a sheet of paper or a paper towel in the bottom of the clean pan before you add litter.   You can just peel the last of the clumpies away – then I rinse with vinegar, wipe dry, let it finish drying then fill again.

Oh – and I STOCKED UP the other day.  Got 2 of the 40 lb bags, and I figure those plus the 2/3 of a bag I still have left should see me through till the fall when I can find them again.

What are some of the ‘mixed responses’? Odour control? Absorbancy? Some are finding a mix of WSP and paper litters a good combo – getting the best feature of both.

You only got two…. I got four… to last me till fall/winter. I guess I over calculated… I bought the forty pound ones too and I only have one bunny. Well it is better to have too many than too little.

I think wood stove pellets work great!

Thanks guys ! I saw them at Lowe’s last week for $4.88 a BAG!! I think they were the 40 lb bags. That is 1/3 of what I pay for the 20lb bag of Yesterday’s News. So I think we will try and make the switch!

They rotate stock between different kinds, basically whatever gets shipped to them. I’de go look at the bags right now, but it is very cold and dark outside and I have all the spare ones in the shed. I can take a look tomorrow though. They can be very tricky to find though. Some keep it outside by the contractors loading area and others by the wood stoves and yet others by the gardeneing stuff. So don’t be dismayed if you can’t find them. My suggestion would be to call them first, then when you arrive ask exactly where they are because they are kept in a different place at each store.

We’ve been talking about it on another thread earlier this week, so I’ve done some research by now and bought Feline Pine, which is WSP specifically made to be litter. Just be aware that some WSP have the accelerent mentioned above, as well as some other possible oils. The companies that make WSP sometimes make a line of litter, and those are cleaned of any oils and additives are not, well, added. So I am starting off slowly with the Feline Pine. Really much better absorbancy so far.

We bought a bag of generic feline pine litter stuff, because the hardware store was out of wood stove pellets. They are IDENTICAL to the wood stove pellets we were using. The WSP were accelerant free etc, and everything about these litter pellets is identical. Except they were 2-3x the price. I’m going to be very happy when the hardware store gets the WSP back in.

Scooter here. We use a dollar-store brush and dustpan to sweep out clumped up wet wood stove pellet debris out of litterboxes. Works quite well, and because the brush and dustpan are solely for bunny cleaning use, it doesn’t matter if it’s clean. It also comes in handy, of course, for sweeping the cage floors clean.
