        Hey guys!

I have a question about designing a “bunny mansion”, I have 2 mini rexes and have had to bring them in and out of the house all winter due to temperature extremes (usually I bring them in for social /free run time after work any way but lately b/c of weather they have been spending the night confined in the house as well)

I want to design an outdoor shed that would keep them well insulated in the winter and cool in the summer, they’ll stillbe coming inside for playtime and have an outdoor run as well, but I would like a place for them to be able to stay as their home with consisitency (no one likes to keep being moved around from place to place every other day) where they will stay comfortable in both winter and summer

any ideas or has anyone done anything like this? thnx!

          Hi!

Is there any chance you can bring your buns in so they can be house bunnies all the time? They are such clean animals and they dont stink and they are such social animals that they love to be around their humans all the time.

We have seen that rabbits who live outside have a much shorter life span compared to house rabbits (I have seen statistics say outside buns live 2yrs compared to inside rabbits who can live 14+). Many times outside buns die because they get scared to death (literally) by prey animals coming up to their house (raccoons, big birds, dogs, cats, etc), or the freak changes in weather-too cold they freeze to death-too hot and they overheat and die. Because buns are animals that others tend to prey on, they will hide if they are sick and by then it could be too late. Bunnies can also get very depressed by being outside and not having the human interaction like the would get inside the house.

There have been people on here who have made outside large runs for their animals but the ones I am thinking of have rabbits that are considered “wild” and stay outside because of their wildness. They were part of a huge rescue of domestic buns thrown outside (referred to as Reno rabbits if you see the posts).

Just beware..like 99% of the members on this site have their buns in their homes so you will see a lot of people posting and asking if you can consider moving your buns into the house full time. Most of us are so OCD about our own buns we tend to be like this with other peopls buns.
We have just seen how amazing rabbits can be as inside animals and want everyone to see how great they are for themselves.

My husband and I have 4 buns, 2minirexes, a dwarf and a lop and they “own” our house! And we love it. We have people come over all the time not to see us but to see our bunnies! lol But that is ok. It is nice to have pets that are just so popular. lol

here’s an article about keeping bunnies indoor from rabbit expert Dana Krempels.

i agree with Hedi that you and the buns would benefit from indoor housing.  if they do desire to be outside sometimes, you could build a collapsible, enclosed rabbit run for those occasions.  a pair of bunnies don’t need TOO MUCH pen or condo room inside (4×4 feet should be fine for two smaller buns) in addition to at least a few hours a day of outside cage playtime.

Hmmmm…I’d agree they are best in the house! It would be a huge undertaking to make them comfortable outside all year. Also, it’s a bit dangerous as even if it can keep predators out, mosquitos carry disease (myxi and vhd to name a few) and flies can cause flystrike.

I know alot of UK people do keep their rabbits outdoors so they may be the best members to help you if you have to keep them outside. I just find I like mine inside best as that feels safest to me Is thier any reason you want them outside? Space maybe? You could build a condo, and you can build up instead of out, that way you mimize the space it uses and give them lots of space.

On this site you’re going to get a lot of “bring them in the house!”. Most of us keep house rabbits, who are part of our families and everyday routine. Bunnies are meant to be socially stimulated!
