For those of you onboard who have Rex or Mini-Rex bunnies, just a question about shedding patterns on your bunnies:

Fiver has been going through a heavy shed for over a month now. He is darned hard to groom as he will attack ANYTHING that comes near him to touch him still. (He has a healthy hate for the love glove now.) He’s had a large patch on his back that is slowly molting and it’s finally moving down his haunches. But what I notice about the new back fur is that it appears to be very wavy. It looks like he got himself a perm! Do all bunnies of this breed do that? Is there something wrong with his fur that I should talk to my vet about? Seriously, it doesn’t look like any other part of him save his forehead, which is the curliest hair on him besides his whiskers.

Also, due to the high heat in the house, the new fur is definitely shorter and less dense. I was wondering if this contributed to the curl?

        Thankies in advance for replies!

Well….  There is a breed of rabbit.  Rare right now.  That has short curly hair.   It comes from a mutated gene in the rex rabbit.  I think the breed is called oh duh   starts with an AH I think

Maybe your rex is one of those kinds of buns?   Rex’s I hear have short curly hair behind their head/ears area.

Then again maybe other Rex’s bunn owners on this site have ran across this too.

Thinner hair maybe could be the heat.  Astrex I think that breed is Astrex.

Maybe look that up or rare rabbit breeds or something of that nature.

            Thanks BT! I’ll give it a look-see.
Yup, Fiver has really curly locks right behind his ears. Too cute! ^_^ But I was amazed at how wavy his back fur is getting underneath this shed. Either way, I have to find some better way to groom him. He hates all the current brushing implements I use. And even though a wet hand works well, but it takes SO long to get all the fur off him I need to take and he gets really agitated if handled too much.
Grumpy little thing. >.< You'd think by now he'd trust me better.

My mini rex has the wavey hair on the back of the neck behind the ears and tween the shoulders. When he sheds it does not seem to be more wavy. But if he is damp then all the fine hairs curl up. So if he has given hinmself a bath he will have wavey hair on those spots for a few hours. Same with when I tried a squirt bottle to stop him from doing something naughty. Or even the wet hand grooming method makes his hair curl if my hands are damp enough. So maybe it is due to him grooming himnself in the places that the hair has come off and the spit is making his hair curl?? I know it is a long shot, but thats all I got.

I suppose that could be the reason also, Crayon. Although I try not to get him TOO wet, I don’t want him to be uncomfortable.

Wow, BT, that wavy hair on that Astrex is almost exactly like Fiver’s back fur! 0_o I really have to wonder if there’s some connection there too? That’d be a strange koinky-dink!

If you Google Astrex, Jerz, there are cuter pictures on other sites. That white one is a bit extreme in curl, but the little babies…! *swoon*

                      MM,
I looked at the link you posted and Spockie, a Mini Rex, never looked anything like that anywhere on him. His was straight as a stick and short hairs except for the whiskers. That’s very different, and I’d say that if Fiver resembles it then he’s part of the strain of Mini Rex that BT described. (Good detective work, BT.)

My vast experience of one bunny, dontcha know.

I don’t recall Spockie obviously shedding out completely either. He didn’t get bare patches, just clumps of fur flying around and being dumped. It usually took about a month. He didn’t like being brushed much, but I did it. Sammy has already made it clear she prefers the brush to the new special comb, but she’s still not shedding. I can’t wait because I think she’s part Rex and only time will tell.

Carrera is a minirex and going thru a nasty molt. She has big areas so short they look bald. She is the same way-hates to be groomed so I tend to pull her hair out as a pet her so she doesnt fight as much.

But Hoope our other minirex, her never sheds!?! Never! He will get loose hair on his butt area but never a full molt. But Carrera is a brown color and Hoopie is white w/ colored spots. I wonder if the spots make a difference with the shedding?

BAH Almost all our buns at the shelter are starting to molt…Got a huge bit from Guss trying to pick him up to brush him!! We don’t have any rexes but they all seem to mold differnetly (some on their back, some on bum, some sides…)

I’ve seen another curly bunny, the plush lops! http://www.canadianplushlops.com/plushloppictures.htm

Thanks for the feedback guys! Yes, Fiver has some seriously wavy hair right now. It looks cool though.

Stormy has very wavy fur in places (looks like he used one of those 80’s crimpers). Behind his neck is really wavy (I call it his ruffly neck hair) and all the fur I brush out near his tail (crimpy bum hair…OMG I have no life…). He just started shedding bad last night but only on his head and neck.

I was plucking off tons of fur off his head and when I was done noticed he not only had short new growth underneath but a big bald spot too. Poor little guy, he looks like he was in a fight. He sheds out like that sometimes, right down to the skin and then the new hair grows out.

Ugh, just the thought of the shedding starting… My horse just started shedding and I knew it was coming because the buns usually do soon after her. Bindi and Olivia will be starting any day I assume. 3 bunnies to groom, 3 pairs of stink eyes until the molt is over. Note to self: stock up on sweet treats to use as peace offerings.

My rex/mini-rex mix doesn’t really shed. I know, I know. She goes through one shed in the spring time and that’s about it. I have never seen wavy hair on her and the only time i can pluck out hair is late spring. The only place her hair is any different is in between and behind her ears.

Owen was described by the shelter as a Rex-mix w/ some cury hairs.  He definitely has some around the head/neck/ears, and maybe a little elsewhere, but nothing really significant.  I can’t help but think Owen could easily be that white Astrex bunny on rabbit geek if he was curly all over; although I might just think so because that bunny is also really wrinkly.

The shelter also said he didn’t shed much, if any at all.  Well, that was a complete lie, as he’s turned into a shedding machine within the last week.  Of course, before I got him I HATED shedding pet hair and I was always annoyed to go over to other people’s houses and get covered in it.  Now that my own pet is doing it I shrug and go, “Oh well.”  And as I’m sure I’m eating as much rabbit hair as I am any food, I can only guess that this is what it’s like to have kids.

Pam, as soon as things calm down here, I promise, more Fiver pix! Right now I am a frazzled mess between Mimzy’s nose trouble and Shadow’s staples that need to come out tonight… >.< Hope I still have fingers after this!

lol! well, i AM an uppy-eared FANATIC! he’s gorgeous! is he a standard rex, or a mini? it’s hard for me to judge size from a pic. my mini rex sheds, but not outrageously like my lop. she’s the only mini rex i’ve ever had so i don’t know if what she does is normal or not. she gets the very definitive shed lines that spread down her wee lil body.

all bunnies are going to shed to some degree, but probably depending on the pattern, it may or may not be as noticable. in general, they have two heavy and two light sheds per year that alternate… but mine seem to always be in a light shed period, until they molt…

I agree – Owen is Beautiful!!!

MM, you are forgiven an impairment in judgement regarding uppy-eared bunnies, since you are under a lot of stress lately. Eventually you’ll come around to what Beka and I already know: that uppy eared bunnies and mini rexes are the creme de la creme (can’t say the best because do not want to hurt my widdle friends’ feelings and make their ears droop more than usual.)

Emmy doesn’t shed a whole bunch and I guess I’m just not very observant but I’ve never noticed any wavy fur on her other than the wrinkly brow.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments about Owen.  I would certainly say he is the cutest thing ever, but I’m a bit biased.

He’s a standard Rex.  Well, he’s not pure-Rex, but there’s definitely nothing mini about him.

As for “uppy” ears vs. lop ears, I find myself continuously swooning at the lops and I think if I could I’d bring every single one of them home with me.  But finding Owen was love at first sight and for now I can only manage one bun, so that’s the way fate goes sometimes.
