Sooo, needless to say, I have been unable to get the bunnies’ litter boxes secured to the cages due to the big plastic bottoms on their pens. This would involved drilling holes in the pen bottoms and compromising the structure. But for the most part, they are doing well without and I have mild amounts of litter box tossing throughout the year.

However, of late, Pip is going for the Olympic record in pan throw. I think it’s probably because she is frustrated that there’s been little xpen time due to the dog being indoors since his surgery and shave. Poor thing, little does she know we have another two weeks before I can even think of housing him outside again and that’s if the weather and his pelt cooperate.

But when Pippi gets to throwing her litter box on a daily basis (several times a day) suddenly all the other ‘prisoners’ are throwing theirs too! Does this happen to anyone else? Should I give them little tin cups instead? Besides the obvious need to exercise and feel less cooped up, and the voluminous amount of toys they have to nom on, what do you do to keep your bunnies from causing a riot, setting the house on fire and beheading the bunny slave?

I am hoping personal time with mum each night for each of them will bring down the level of bunny cabin fever, although they are hard to handle with the exception of Fiver.

Gosh, I don’t know what to do for rioting buns………camomile??

Can you try secure the boxes from the top down? Like put a piece of dowel down thru the top of the cage and seat it in diagonal corners of the box. Then place something over the top of the dowel so it can’t be pushed upwards. Actually, even putting dowel thru the sides so that they lay along each end of the box would work better.  Still, if that worked you still have to provide alternative entertainment/ or protest aids.

            …little tin cups…LOL!

And here I was just thinking it might be OK to untie Sammy’s litter pan because it’s so hard to clean when I can’t move it around. (I use a cat litter scoop. Over and over and over again. She supervises.)

If your pans are plastic and they have any bars on their houses, (I don’t think you’ve posted pix of the prisons in a while. Can’t picture ’em.) you could poke a hole about the size of a screwdriver, or two, on one side of the litter pan, then loop a tie that’s used to hold NIC cubes through and around a cage bar. If you twist it diagonally above and below a cage cross piece, it can’t slide far. If I’m not explaining well, I’ll post a pix.

Actually, Pam, both Mimz and Pip have pens just like Sammy’s. And yes, it’s SO hard to clean if the pans are attached to something. With the kind of mess my buns make, I have to be able to remove those pans at least twice a day. That would be a lot of zipties. 0_o
(P.S. Do you find that right now, during the winter, the plastic on these pens is so charged with static that the fur seems to get pulled off the bunnies and collects ALL OVER the inside and outside of the pen? I have to use those Swiffer cloths to get it off and I go through a box of 48 about every few days or so!)

I was advised a long time ago to get those dog clips to secure to the zipties to secure to the pen bars. Doing that however would cause a lot of noise when Pippi gets feisty.

I suppose it would be worth a try though. These pans are cheap enough, if it doesn’t work I can just get new ones.

I am also thinking maybe a heavier pan that she can’t possibly get her teeth into and flip or lift. I wouldn’t want her to hurt herself trying, though. >_< Hmmm.. is a puzzlement.

She’s a strong bunny. The vet tech last time she was in noticed that when held she tends to grip you with those claws of hers. She likened it to a raccoon. ^_^ Hence when she clawed my daughter on the forehead, she had a nice scar for a bit. 0_o

Sometimes I wonder if two strips of velcro on the bottom of the pan/cage floor would work. Not the little dots, but the wide ones you can cut to any length. My only concern would be if the buns could still lift it off, and then nibble the strips. But if it worked, you’d be strong enough to separate it for cleaning, but the buns wouldn’t.

It could be something as simple as using twist ties instead of zip ties. So you untwist, pull out pan, and retwist into place again when finished.

When I went on holidays I had an extra container for hay in the cage for the buns, but Noelle liked to tip it. So I put a zip tie around the handles, then used one of those carabiner clips (that come on like, water bottles and stuff to hook onto things) to attach it to the cage. Made it real easy to remove to refill without going through a million zipties. I think I stole the idea from a picture Beka posted of her hay setup. But that could be another potential solution. Of course, Wally eventually chewed through the zip ties, but it took him a while. 🙂

Hmm…I just reread your post a bit closer, and apparently noise is a factor…so that would probably rule out the carabiners…oh well. Sorry!

In order to get holes in plastic without damaging structure

I put a nail on the stove burner and put it ti high heat and wait a bit.  When it is real hot I grab a plier to pick the nail up otherwise you will get burned fingers.  I take it to the plastic I want to put the hole in and it goes right through.

Well, I was going to have the hubby drill some holes tonight, but that may be a better idea. :-/
But…don’t you have to worry about the smell of burning plastic? And if bunny should nibble the melted parts? (I guess I should ask…does this method leave any ‘hanging chads’ on your plastic piece?) ^_^
Pip chews the boxes so bad I had to have the hubby cut and file all the rough edges to them and to her ramp leading to her sleeping shelf. She’s like a plastic eating beaver! 0_o
What gets me is how once she starts, they ALL do it! Talk about spreading a bad habit!

No I didn’t have any hanging chads.  I put the nail from inside and it went through made the hold and poked out the outside of the cage.  If has rough edges they will be on the outside of the cage.  I didn’t notice any sticking out or anything though.

I think the drill would make it smell more.  You can do it outside or leave the door open.  I really didn’t get a smell from it.

Only time I got a smell was with using a knife to cut a plastic shelf for Cotton to put in his cage.  The nail holes are so small they shouldn’t smell.

The plastic was big so I got a big smell and had left the door open and windows too.  good luck.

OH I used string to tie down the litterbox.  i used big big zip ties for the shelf.  I hope your naughty girl doesn’t chew thru those very quickly.
