Ok so my little Holland Lop Guppy has been on an all hay diet for sometime now.  I’ve been gradually introducing small amts of veggies (mostly lettuce and herbs) and he’s been eating a little though not as much as I’d like (he’ll eat half a leaf of romaine and a few snippets of herbs a day). He goes through hay like CRAZY.  I have to refill his bin at least 3 times a day, which is managable, but the amt of waste this little bunny produces is UNBELIEVABLE.  He will literally poo and pee his body weight everyday.  I have to fill his box with the extra abosorbent litter, and even that gets soaked within 6 hrs.  He finishes his 16 oz water bottle everyday, which is probably why he’s peeing so much.  But there’s also a veritable mountain of poo as well! And his poops are huge too (esp compared to my Netherland Cheeky, who is the same size).  It’s gotten to the point where I am refilling his litter box twice a day, because his highness will not deign to pee in a soaked litterbox, instead he will opt to pee on the surrounding vinyl.  I haven’t called the vet yet, because the pee and poos are all normal looking, but goodness this bun!  He is eating me out of house and hay!

That’s the hays job… To help flush everything out. If you were on an all fiber diet, you’d be owning stock in the Charmin….

I am sure I have missed something from previous posts- but why is he on an all hay diet?  It sounds as though you are encouraging him to eat veggies- and I would keep working on that.  Does he get any pellets at all?  If all he is eating is hay and minimal veggies- hay is so dry and high in fiber- that might be why he is drinking so much.  I would be a little concerned that he is not getting other vitamins and minerals in his diet from refusing to eat any quantity of veggies and absolutely no pellets at all.

I would recommend contacting the vet and making an appt.

He’s on the all hay diet because he was having a cecal overproduction issue – like 5-10 bunches left over every day. I had to cut the pellets completely and that stopped. The vet told me he just might be too sensitive for pellets (I think theres some buns that are) so I’ve decided to make those treats as opposed to a major part of his diet (he gets 10 tim hay pellets a day as treats, there was a day when he got a little more and the cecals reappeared) The rest is timothy hay and the little veggies he’ll eat. I think the hay might be a little drying to the little guy and his poor bunny bum must get sore from pooing so much! I’ve tried a few different lettuces (romaine, red leaf), spinach, parsely and mint but so far no luck. I guess I’ll have to keep going through the gamut.

Try dandelion greens, escarole or chopped up celery. Felony is pretty finicky about veggies but he will crush those

Same here! Edson used to drink about 48 oz a water a day.  Now he’s down to about 16 oz. but this is after 1 year.  I had all kinds of tests done and nothing showed up.  It was determined that his past had something to do with it – maybe he didn’t get enough water. so he became  a psycho water drinker. You may want to make sure your rabbit doesn’t have diabetes or something else.  Anyway I too am filling his hay 3x a day.  I also have to change his litter box daily because of the pee & poop! I highly recommend wood stove pellets to use in the litter box- a thin layer and pile that with hay. That way his little feet will not get wet. That was my biggest worry. Yes you kinda waste hay but it’s cheap enough and it works incredibly well.  You really need to clean his litter box daily with a pee’er.  I have 2 that I alternate so it’s not a big deal.  First thing when I get up I switch out the boxes with a clean one.  It’s fantastic your bun eats so much hay. Is it Timothy hay?Just try some of the suggestions for greens. The food link above under Bunny Info is excellent.  Good luck.

Kokanee – I didn’t know buns could have raddichio!!! We always have that, so I will def give that a try as well

Felony – thanks for the celery tip! Guppy ate all 3 of the litte wedges I gave him! Unfortunately the escarole went untouched, but I’ll be having that for dinner tonight

Knowl – Omg first off Edson is super cute, is he also a Holland? But goodness 48 oz, that is ALOT of water for such a small little body! I think with carefresh being so expensive I’m going to have to make the woodstove switch eventually. Luckily I’ve got a source for cheap hay and I think they carry woodstove pellets too. I will definately have to try that with Guppy considering all the litter/hay he goes through.

and don’t forget that horrid tasting arugula.  My buns just love that stuff.

Poor little bunny.  He really has a bad stomache huh?  Over 10 tim pellets and too many cecals ouch.

Are you collecting his poo for the garden?

Perhaps you can try a litterbox with a wire grate over it?  If he will use that will help his litter last though 1 day without his highness getting his feet wet.    Well just a thought.

Lol, I happen to like arugula – but then again I’m a veggie person! Well his tum issues have been ongoing, I think he just can’t handle a too rich diet so I’ve got to keep it very bland for him. I don’t have a garden, but I should considering all this wonderful fertilizer that’s going to waste!

I haven’t tried the grate over the box, just because my buns won’t even walk on tile, they’re so picky about where their little feet go. Someone posted a link to the petsmart litterbox with a guard over it, and I think I’ll be investing in that pretty soon!

OMG…I totally thought of Edson and was wondering when Knowls would chime in

Just wondering if the probiotic stuff would be helpful to keep the cecals in check?

For mine Parsley (both types) and cilantro are always in their bunny salads.  I’ve also been giving them pretty regular servings of dandelion greens since summer, when they were so plentiful at the farmer’s market.

I’ve tried parsely, weirdly Cheeky nor Guppy care for it. But I had some success last night!!! I picked out the green leaves from our organic spring mix and offered that and Guppy loved it! I even got Cheeky, my bun who is never interested in veggies to eat it with gusto! I’m so happy, I’m going to do some serious green shopping tonight!
