We worked out a schedule for our two ‘Village People”. One goes in the cage for one day, the other stays out. It’s funny, but while one is in the cage, the other one is always next to the cage, keeping the other rabbit company, especially Fang. When he is out, he never leaves the cage, he even climbs on top of it. (We have to cover the top of the cage when Fang is out, otherwise he ’rains’ little poos down on Smokey!) In the evening, we let them be together in a neutral room (my bathroom) to see if they can tolerate each other.
Since last week, Smokey has attacked Fang every time they were together, except for last night. Last night Fang sat still, and Smokey actually spent ten minutes cuddling with him! The Fang went and ruined it by trying to mount Smokey. The minute he pestered Smokey with love dances and attempted mountings, Smokey lunged at Fang, just as he has been.
So, at least now I know what the problems is. Fang has a serious problem in differentiating male from female. Smokey is determined to show him the difference. I suppose that when all the testosterone has pumped itself out of Fang, he won’t be so obsessive, and give up the Fatal Attraction thing he seems to be showing to Smokey.
I know I’m right, because we noticed that when it’s Smokey’s turn in the cage, which is right next to the sofa so we can reach in and pet him, if I sit next to the cage, my feet are close to it. Fang will try to headbutt my foot away from the cage, and if that doesn’t work, he nips. He does this to anyone who sits too close to the cage. He does that little Donald Duck quacky noise when he’s after feet, too. I realize this means he’s in a pissy mood, and he’s ‘grumbling.’ Smokey gets annoyed after a while because Fang won’t leave the cage alone. Smokey will turn his back on Fang to go to sleep, and when he does, Fang will thump a back foot to get his attention. He doesn’t seem to be angry or aggressive when he thumps, so I find that rather weird, but that would be Fang for you.
