I’ve had my unaltered adult male bun for about 4months and he’s a sweetheart. No real spraying, no destructive behavior, no aggression… He seems perfectly content living in my home, except, he doesn’t seem to be interested in any of the toys I bring him. He’s got cardboard boxes, dangly chew toys, rags, tunnels, tossy toys— everything. But he hasn’t really taken an interest. He’s more like a lap bunny than anything else… it’s weird. I sorta expect him to want to chew and dig, but no dice. I haven’t seen him chewing on anything except hay.  (And not even that often. I adopted him and I have a feeling that he was more of pellet guy than hay guy.) He’d rather sit on my lap or lay at my feet than play with any of the stuff he has. What gives?

i bet about 98% of our members wish they had that problem… lol.

that just might be his personality. not all buns are into traditional toys, some like to find enjoyment others ways. if he grew up never getting any stimulation then he might not know what to do with it. he does sound happy tho, so i wouldn’t worry about him not playing with those items.

does he not eat hay often? what does his diet consist of daily? hay should be the main part of his daily intake.

when was the last time he’s been seen by a vet to check his teeth? have you noticed any teary eyes and/or wetness around his mouth? if he is in tooth discomfort, that can stop them from wanting to chew excessively or eat hay. just something to consider…

He has fresh hay available to him at all times and he must be nibbling on it when hes in the litter box because the amount decreases, but he doesnt go after it with any gusto. He favors timothy based pellets, but I’ve been making a conscious effort to reduce the amount of pellets he gets. He gets about 3 small handfuls of pellets through out the day and he gets fresh vegetables in addition to that. I bought timothy cubes to see if he was interested in that, but alas, no interest.  I don’t think hes having any dental problems. He chews on vegetables, like carrots and sometiems cardboard (just nibbles, mind you.) but I dont see any signs of discomfort. His teeth look like they are ok, but really, what do I know? Lol.

that’s good you’re trying to reduce the pellet amounts. they should actually be the least part of his daily diet. for a five pound bunny (probably about what he weighs, maybe a little less) the recommended daily amount is only 1/4 cup.

BinkBunny has a diet info section on this site… here is the link…  https://www.binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/Diet/tabid/60/Default.aspx

and this is a great diet article from rabbit expert Dana Krempels… http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/diet.html

that’s good that he prefers the timothy based pellets and hay.  that’s what rabbits over one year should be eating.  alfalfa is only for young rabbits and (sometimes) senior rabbits that need the extra calories.

One of my rabbits, Noelle, has never been much of a chewer. She does eat a lot of hay, but has never chewed on cords, furniture, cardboard or toys. So I agree that having the teeth checked the next time you’re at the vet to rule out any problems there – but it’s probably just his personality. Lucky you if it is just his nature and not a tooth problem! My second bunny gets into quite a lot of trouble with his chewing and I miss the chew-free days!

Laith wasn’t a chewer either. HE was content to be petted.  I took him to the vet she said it is his personality and his hay habits well he was just plain finicky.

Have you tried paper? Felony isn’t a chewer or a digger, and really isn’t all the interested in toys (except for his maze) but good lord you give that bunny a napkin or a phonebook and he’s a happy happy man.

Also, just wanted to add that one of the only things Felony will chew on are alfalfa cubes. They are just compress alfalfa hay. I give him one from time to time and it usually lasts about a week. At least then I know he’s gnawing on something to keep his teeth trimmed.

Oh, lord paper! Quantum’s the same way, Hooty–give her a paper towel or, her newest favorite, a balled-up piece of plain white paper and she is one happy bun. And don’t leave any newspapers hanging around if you haven’t read it yet……

So phone books are safe for bunnies? Even the glossy covers, or does that need to be ripped off?

My bunny love hard cardboard as his main chewy item. I go to the pet store and get the cardboard tubes that aquarium backgrounds are dispenced from. They will usually give any empty ones to you for free. I cut it into smaller rings but leaving them long is fun too. Bunny likes to dig at it and roll it when it is left long.

for phone books, i always tear off the glossy covers, front and back… i think the buns prefer it that way, easier access to the fun, shreddable paper…

My little boy prefers paper towels and newspapers. He rips them in to long shreds and will occasionally attempt to construct a newspaper tent.

Kokanee used to find used napkins (generally with pizza goo on them) and tear around the apartment with them. Try to take it away, she’d hide it in her litter box so you couldn’t have it!!

Her fav toy? Running around the apartment, seeing how high she could get, what she could get on top of/under/behind, and finding out what was under the carpet (Baseboards….) LOL
