        my friend says her bunnies like to chew on pine cones and I wondered if this was ok because pine is not suppose to be good for them?  does anyone else let their bunnies chew pine cones?

          Pine cones are okay if they are prepared properly.(washed and They should not be given directly of the tree since there can be sap, insects etc that would not be good for your bunny.

          They must be washed, then dry it off and bake it in the oven one hour at 200 degrees.

              One of my daughter’s favorite phrases to use when talking about her bunny’s disapproving looks is, “Are you sittin’ on a pine cone, Pip?” ^_^

              I was wondering about pine cones too, since I see packaged ones at the pet store all the time. Does anyone know if these are okay to give bunny? (I am skeptical, because this particular brand of rabbit treat is a company that hails from China and with all the melamine poisoning, I just wouldn’t want to take the chance, but if I can find other stores that sell domestic ones, pre-packaged, would those be okay straight from the package?)

                I always go find the pinecones that most people think of the smaller ones that open up. Around here we also have the very long thinner ones that dont really open but i have never seen anyone gives those to buns to know if they are safe or not.

                The one very neat thing is if you find pinecones that are still closed if you bring them in your house the heat will cause them to open up over a day or so. Or if you “bake” them right after you wash them and they are closed they will open in the oven.

                  I don’t think I’d want to use our black spruce cones, they’re small and very seedy. Lots of sap on them too.

                  Don’t suppose any of you who are in the states would donate a few REAL pine cones? lolz… xD I hate the pine trees up here, they’re about good for nothing but matchsticks. I miss the beautiful pines and sequoias of California. ;_;

                    I picked up some GIANT pine cones from the trees alongside the building where I work.  I assume these are safe and I plan to give ’em to Owen after washing/baking them.  I can see about picking up more; I didn’t look too hard, so there’s probably a bunch around.

                        OH..and you have to watch the ones for people and decorating-they typically come scented.
