  Our newe adopted bunny Benny came to live with us yesterday. When he arrived I noticed that his right eye is watery and his fur around the eye is wet. I have inspected it carefully and there is no sign of redness, swelling of any white discharge. I’m just soncerned because I know how serious eye infections can be.
  
  After some online research I have found articles about rabbits having allergies, specifically eye allergies. Benny has been living in a “Pet Porter” which is basically a very large plastic dog kennel. It is mostly enclosed, but has a wire door on the front. I’m wondering if the enclosed space has caused poor ventilation and that is irritating his eye.
  
  Benny has a check up with the vet next week, so we will find out for sure then but wanted to see if anyone here has a bun with eye allergies. I just worry because he is our new little guy and I think he had a rough life at his last home so I want to make sure he gets off to a good start with us.

  Strong amonia, from their urine in litterbox can cause eye irritation. So if he is enclosed, that might be part of the problem. You will have to change his litterbox much more often, but I would definitely recommend a more open habitat though for a permanent home.
  
  Also have your vet check his teeth. Many times teeth problems can cause “watery” eyes. Rucy’s tears will stream down her cheek when her teeth are bothering her. (she gets her spurs checked and trimmed often though)

  I’ll ditto on the teeth, that can certainly cause eye problems. Great you have a vet exam lined up-then you can find out what’s going on and treat it if necessary.

  When I got my bunny, Olivia, she had goopy eyes with a clear, runny discharge. She had been housed in a small pet store glass tank and her cage was full of old pee and shavings (this, on top of the eye and her looking so sad, is why I just had to save her). I brought her to the vet and the vet gave me some drops but told me to wait a few days and to see if it clears up in the healthier environment. It cleared up in a few days and I didn’t have to use the drops. So it could be similar in your Benny’s situation, but it’s great you are bringing him to the vet so she can find out for sure what is causing it. How sweet and caring of you to want him to have a good start in his new life. Good luck at the vet!

  Good news! The vet checked out Benny last week and said he is a pretty healthy little bun! The watery eye is caused by clogged tear ducts. He is on some eye drops that the vet hopes will help. If it doesn’t clear it up in the next 2 weeks, he will flush his tear ducts when he take him to get nuetered, that way he will already be sedated so hopefully it will be less stressful.
  
  The vet said his teeth looked good. I was a little worried about them since he is a lop, the shape of his face makes it hard to sneak a peek. So I think we are off to a great start.

  Oh that good news! Rucy also has one clogged tear duct. (it’s more of a permanent thing), but her buddy Jack makes sure to keep it clean, and if he falls behind, it’s easy to keep from getting sore and crusty with just a quick daily wipe of a warm damp cloth.
  
  I’m so glad to hear that he got a clean bill of health and doesn’t have teeth problems. That is great!
