I’ve had long term issue with this, mainly some piles of poop on the floor in front of her 2nd litter box.  This behaviour has worsened this last few weeks. Jersey has been consistantly peeing on the floor, mainly in front of her litter box in the kitchen. After some concerns about possible urine infection I am now 99% sure it is territorial and a bit protest peeing.

She has peed 3 times in my presence. 1 time while I was standing next to her in front of her box (Not unusual, she’ll use it normally while I’m standing there). Another time when I herded her with hand clapping out of a hidey spot in the living room – she went into the kitchen and peed by the oven. 3rd time was in corner opposite her litter box corner – can’t remember if there was a trigger that time.

Then through out the day I’ll discover some poop or pee on the floor as well. Not like a dribble, A puddle. I know she knows how to use her box and often she uses it then jumps out & pees/poops on the floor also. Thing is, I have really resolved to remove that litter box from that spot. I have never liked it there but she chose to spot.  I haven’t done this yet so it’s not attributing to this current behaviour. I figure though, that once I move it she WILL protest and poo and pee there, so as she’s already doing this, I might as well move it now and try get her to use it in a new location.

I think she’ll use the litter box in a new location no worries, but how do I stop this ongoing territorial attitude to the kitchen?   It’s like she has really upped the ante with peeing also.

Should I be addressing the territory issue before relocating the box?

I think if she’s being territorial there I would take away the territory for now.

I’ll ditto Sarita, I read on ‘the language of lagomorphs’ (and it sounds very right to me) that rabbits divide the world up into their space, shared space and your space. She’s likely protesting you being in her space (the kitchen-how dare you!) so if you can keep her out of there and let her know it’s yours (probably not by peeing on the ground but whatever works ) she may stop!

Hi. Thanks for the simplicity of your answers. It’s just what I needed! I was getting to caught up trying to decipher this behaviour and all the various reasons. Looks like the pen I got for her and hardly use will become my new kitchen barrier. That should be interesting. I might try it without first.

Question; I have allowed it to be shared territory by having her 2nd box there. With reclaiming this space, should I move the box “cold turkey”? i.e.designate new spot, keep her out of area in kitchen? I sort of have too right?
K&K I nearly jokingly mentioned the ‘fight fire with fire’ method but thought it might come across as weird – lol!

edit: ignore my question…..I see what I have to do.  remove this territoy for now, remove the box.

How is it working JG? I know you’ve had this problem for a while, is Jersey seriously mad at you for stealing ‘her’ space?

Well……..I haven’t officially laid down the law yet. Guess I was giving her a last chance, and I had a few good days until today. As usual, I’m more of the problem than her…I-must-be-firm!   As to whether she’s “mad at me”, I don’t know. Can’t figure out her motives sometimes

One benefit in all this is I can get a good look at the colour of her pee etc – all healthy!  Every cloud has a silver lining and all that….
