I might be getting a bunny on time-share.

History: The last of my buns died over a year ago and I have been hesitant about starting over. Back in December or November, I started a conversation here asking for your perspectives on why we set ourselves up for heartbreak by toving these amazing and fragile creatures. Your responses were great, and gave me a lot to think about. One of you suggested that I might want to foster instead of adopt if I’m ambivilent about the commitment. Thank you so much for that suggestion.

I have new friend whose sister, Cassie, is a college student who has been between apartments for a year or so (she just returned from an internship in Japan), and has her dogs and rabbit boarded with friends. Cassie is particularly anxious about the bun’s situation, as he’s too far away to visit and she doesn’t know if he’s being kept indoors or out. (We have -20 wind chills coming tomorrow here on the lakeshore in Michigan.) It may be a while before Cassie will be able to reunite her animal family, so my husband and I offered to board the bun, Sam Wise, indefinitely. Since I’m laid off right now, I’ve got time to orient him to our home and work on litter box training. This could work out great for all of us: a temp bun for me, easy visitation for Cassie, and a cushy home for Sam.

Cassie showed me a picture of Sam Wise, and he appears to be some sort of large spotted bun with up-ears. In the photo, Sam was herding the dogs back into their night-kennel for Cassie. Oh, what have I set myself up for??? (*excited giggle*)

        Wish us luck!

Congratulations. I think that is great that you are helping her out and getting to snuggle with a bunny again too. Keep us updated.

Dittos on the congratulations, sounds like a near-perfect situation. (using the “p” word – perfect always jinxes things for me)

Sam Wise the Brave? now you need a Frodo for him to protect!

Congrats!  I have fostered some animals before long term- a cat for 4 months while owner was in a shelter for women. and currently a Golden Retriever that needs to have knee surgery and no stairs during recovery and healing.  Although I do love the fosters, I do not fall as deeply in love.  I think because I know they have an owner and someone already loves them and they already have their “forever person”.

So this might be a good way to experiment with bunny “enslavement” again- and maybe Sam Wise will prepare you for your next bun. Sometimes things work out they way they do for a reason.
