Hello – I’m new here, so “Hi!”

Before Thanksgiving, I adopted two buns from the local shelter – they had each been found hopping down the side of the road, apparently dropped off by someone who didn’t want them (two SEPERATE abandonments, no less.)

We’ve been through some rough patches, and it’s taken a long time to get along, but they now seem to like each other and will cuddle up on occasion and clean eachother’s faces.

According to the shelter and vet report (from getting neutered) one is a mini rex and the other was listed as “Silver” – I looked up both and the mini rex (Edsel is his name) tagging seems right on. The Silver breed rabbit is apparently fairly rare – I find it a little odd that a rare domestic bun would be let go to hop down the streets of rural Vermont.

Ringo is almost double the size of my mini rex – he is a true black with hairs along his side that are tipped in ivory.

        I have a TWO questions:

        1. Does this sound like a Silver breed, or is this a lovable mutt?

        2. He recently (past few days) has been getting more and more of that white tip fur everywhere – including to lines on his cheeks that are getting rather distinctive. (My boyfriend thought he was losing his fur, but there is no bald spot – just lighter colored fur.

OK – I have ONE more question (sorry)  – They are NOT into being touched AT ALL – I try to bribe them with goodies, but it only gets so far. PLUS, when I DO have to pick them up (like to check this fur issue,) they HATE it and it just further destroys their trust and wanting to get anywhere near me. Ideas? I know they won’t be dog-like, but it would be nice to have them not THUMP me every time I walk by…

        Thank you all!

          Hi Oodelally, welcome here.

Firstly, thanks for adopting 2 needy buns! It’s unbelievable isn’t it, that people just let them go into the world on their own?!  Chances are Ringo is a lovable mutt with some Silver in him but never mind that, most of us here have mutts! The Silver is said to get between 4-7 pounds. With the fur changing, it could be he’s beginning a molt. My bunny gets whiter tip ends as she begins hers. When molting, you often see a line moving from the head onwards. It’s pretty interesting to see.

Another member here that has some Silver Fox rabbits (different breed) said sometimes if she feeds them sunflower seeds, the oil triggers a molt and the silvering falls out! So diet can certainly affect their coats.

On you last question I would say; rabbits come to like and trust you in their own good time! One of the best things is to just be down at their level and let them approach you. Just do anything, read the paper, a book, whatever, and pretty much ignore them. They usually cannot resist and come to investigate you. Don’t immediately reach out to pet them though. If they bump you with the nose or lower the head to the ground, you can take that as a “pet me” request. It does take some time and being shelter buns, they may have some trust issues to work out but it’ll come!

Oh, by the way, some piccies will help identifying Ringo a bit……..and don’t leave out Edsel!  I’m really requesting them so I can ooh and ahh!

Congratulations on adopting these 2 rabbits.

As for the breeds, a rex rabbits is pretty easy to identify based on the fur but most shelters and rescues aren’t truly familiar with rabbit breeds so it’s possible the Silver rabbit is something else or just a mix.

I agree with Jerseygirl on the trust issue and do post some pictures of your rabbits – we love pictures.

                Congrats!! We need pictures!!

Rabbits do change color especially when they are ‘molting’ or shedding. They don’t change seasonally but when they go through a heavy shed, its quite normal to see some color change.

On picking them up or handling them-really you just have to work at it; It takes a lot of time to earn a bunnies trust. Once you do-it’s very rewarding. The treat thing is great. Try sitting on the ground when your reading or watching TV, they’ll come right up to you. The other thing I do is grab a sleeping bag (ok I’m a nerd!) and take a nap on the ground, so they’ll come hang out with me. Being on the ground is the best way to interact and the more interaction you have that’s postive, the more they’ll trust you.

Silver; I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it before *off to look it up* From what I see sounds about right. Looks like they are a solid color with white frosting (like a ‘roan’ in horses) http://www.albc-usa.org/cpl/silver.html
and rabbits are pretty much the cutest animal alive and people still manage to do terrible things to them, so yes, I’d believe someone would dump a rare breed -Your luck though

                Welcome!!
