I have been on this site for about 1 1/2 yrs now as longs as I have rescued my bunny Beepers from a bad situation…He was abused by a child and not taken care of by the previous owners…With all of your help I was able to help him get to be a wonderful..loving..beautiful 2 1/2 yr mini satin that he should be….he is neutered…eating well…litter trained..comes to his name and does tricks…I love him so much…

I have been having breathing problems since Aug 08…It got so bad in Nov 08..I went to Hospital for Phneumonia..so they thought…I started to get sick again in Jan 09…Went to Allergist and he says I am ALLERGIC!!!! to My BUNNY…I asked if he could be wrong..but he did the test again…and he did it in front of me and it came out the way it way he explained it would. He said I have to get rid of Beepers and Move..

My question to anyone is…Has anyone had this happen…Can you keep your Bunny somehow or if you can’t How to know you are going to get a good home for your Bunny..He went through so much before I got him..I don’t want him to go throught hat again….The Humane societhy here can not promise me this…Please any help for a Loving Bunny Mom would be appcieated…

        Thank You

Usually, most allergies are from the hay that the rabbit eats and not the rabbit themselves and trying a different type of hay (oat hay instead of timothy) can fix it. But if he did an actual fur test of the rabbit, then you are allergic.

If you can’t find a rescue that will help you with the relocation, I would suggest using something like craigslist and put out an ad. Make sure to include something like a $30 adoption fee so it will be someone who actually wants a rabbit. You can also meet the person and get a feel for them.

I am allergic to the saliva of most furry animals. Had horrible asthma attacks as a child when I was around cats and dogs. I have never really had a problem w/ my buns but the fur molting and timothy hay really gives me problems. I put my buns downstairs so that the flying hair and hay is in one general area. I am on Advair for my breathing issues that has taken my breathing problems away completely. I went from wheezing all the time to no problems after I was put on Advair.

I havent been to an allergist in years. I was one of those kids allergic to everything under the sun and one allergy shots for years and years. I havent had problems until I adopted my 3rd bunny. I started wheezing and having problems spending time w/ them.
So…I went to my family doctor and explained the situation with my babies and she put me on Advair. I used to criticize my aunt who has like 12 cats and cant breath in her own house but now I know why she puts up with her issues.

I wear a cheap face mask when I change litter boxes and when I put hay in their houses and keep my hay covered.

If I was in your shoes I honestly dont know what I would do. Do you think you could try some different options or are you just ready to go ahead and adopt out your baby?

What exactly did he test you for exactly? Are you allergic to the fur, their saliva, their skin? If you knew what is was that may help.

I’m allergic to my bunny too—i’m allergic to basically all animals. Its funny that it just started affecting you recently though! I’ve found that having my bunny has actually helped me with my animal allergies—-I can handle being around basically any animal now because having a bunny has built up my resistance.

Is there some kind of cheap, every day allergy medication that you can take to help this? Wow, what a crappy situation. I hope you can figure something good out! I’d hate for you to have to get rid of your bun!

I guess your system could be more compromised now after having had pnuemonia. If it were me, I would look at trying to strengthen your immune system and building a resistance. My mother once went to an allergist who injected small amounts of the allergen regulalry to help here build up a resistance.

I just asked the bunny allergy question in another forum, and it turns out, I’m not allergic to rabbits… But anyhow, years ago, I went to an allergist who said I was allergic to all kinds of foods (chocolate, celery, almonds). But really I’m not, I eat all of those things with no problems. So I guess my point is that I think allergies are more complicated than just having a single test. I would first try to get some more info like Hedi said, what part of the rabbit are you exactly allergic to, then try to minimize your exposure to that. Do get rid of him just yet until you try different things. The first thing my allergist said was “get rid of your cat”. Well I’m sorry, but that’s not always an option. You sound like a great bunny mom and I bet you can find a solution before you have to rehome your bun. Good luck.

I’m allergic to our bunnies too. And the cats, and the dog, and the houseplants (and the garden plants, and the trees…). I’m on a dual allergy med regime – I take claritin in the morning and an allergy spray at night. Actually I take the cheap costco brand instead of the claritin, it’s like 1/5th the price.

I used to think I just got colds easily, and regularly, until I went to the allergist and discovered I was allergic to basically everything. So now I take my allergy meds regularly and although sure I still get the occasional cold it’s nowhere near as frequent as it was before – of course before I just thought most of them were colds when it was really the allergies.

My advice is to try some allergy meds for a while and see what happens!

I am allergic to the timothy hay so I take steps to minimize the dust.

I’ve had Pepper for about 3 years now and after a year or so I developed an allergy to her.  Mostly I just have to be vigilant about using my Roomba, and when I pick her up or play with her I have to wash my hands and arms or I get hives.

I have severe allergies to cats and dogs (which is why I got a bunny in he first place) and asthma, and I take a daily generic zyrtec, singulair, and a steroid nasal spray and a steroid inhaler.

I really hope you find a good solution, everyone seems to have great ideas and you definitely have people in the ‘same boat.’

Allergies can be managed– I am only slightly allergic to cats(I sneeze, cough, itch) and bunny hair is made of a similar composition, so sometimes Honey irritates me if I hold her against bare skin. I take daily allergy meds.

However you sound like you have a much more severe case so I hope for the best for you.

You know…  I had been going to an allergy specialist for years taking shots.  They tested me after 4 years find I am in good shape now.  And i was not allergic to cats.  Or rabbits…

So my primary care Dr.  Tested me recently said I am allergic to cats/dogs   not rabbits.

She had tested me a year ago and said same thing.   And milk too.   Now recently I am not allergic to milk..

And the allergy specialist said I am not allergic to cats.

So confusing.  I don’t know what to beleive about the milk or cats.  I do know when I slept with my cat I woke up stuffy.  After my cat was gone it cleared up.

I take claritin prescription strength and nasonex.  Both work good.  I take clarinex year around.  I am allergic to nearly every mold and timmy grass too.

RAgweed pine trees grasses in general and trees in general. Bluch.

I have an air purifier in the bedroom.   The windows are open now and allergies aren’t too bad not like they were years ago.  I couldnt’ breathe.

Hopefully you can find a solution.  It is heartbreaking to find out you are allergic to your fav pet.  If I do become allergic to my rabbits they stay.  I told my Dr. and thats that.   So she happily told me not the rabbits.  So far so good.  Though I could develop an allergy to them later on.

                          Hope not.

She is giving me allergy shots twice a week now.  So I guess I am back on them.   I get 4 shots.  Seems like a lot where b4 I coudl do them at home and was only one.  this Dr. won’t let me do them at home.

I didn’t mean to be rude to you..   IF you are so seriously allergic then a person would have to do something maybe even as drastic as getting the pet a new home.

I wouldn’t get rid of my pets however I am not as allergic as before to stuff after the shots.

Maybe try shots air purifier and such. Hopefully it will work out for you both that bun can stay.   I know it is hard to part with a beloved pet.

Gosh that ws a rotten thing to say.  How about a better idea.   Dump that Dr. and find a good one club. heha heee.

Some of them are so cold hearted.  I wish you the best.  A good companion animal makes a person feel better.  Especially if you are disabled and can’t get out much. There is proof of that.  You need your bunny.  And he needs you.  May it work out for you two.
