If you’re looking for a way to discount a spay or a neuter, that might be a good way to go about it. I know DJ had two rabbits that morning, and, based on her current state (bouncing around like a happy thing) and the general lack of problems we’ve had (at day 7) I think he did a pretty good job.

VPI pet insurance will not cover any part of a spay or neuter as that is a “wellness” procedure and they do not offer the additional wellness rider for bunnies that they do for cats and dogs.  Things can vary from state to state due to different regulations per state- but I am pretty sure that is the same in every state.  Bunnies don’t get the annual vaccines, heartworm tests, and other things that cats and dogs do so that is why they probably did not create a rider to cover annual wellness things (costs additional anyway).

You can check around at local spay/neuter clinics- but our local C-Snip (low income spay/neuter) does not do rabbits as they feel there is not a rabbit overpopulation problem in our area like there is for cats and dogs. 

Hey I emailed 2 pet ins places one being VPI.   One came back saying they dont’ cover rabbits.      I think I am going to call them since here you are saying it does cover rabbits.  I dont’ remember which one emailed me back. Only 1 did.

NO usually ins. does not cover spays.

When I got Pepper covered, VPI was really the only game in town for rabbits.  They don’t cover “wellness” things like speuters, nor do they cover “supplements” like getting a probiotic when your bun is on antibiotics.

And I’m not really happy with their limits for chronic conditions.  Pepper maxed out her coverage for pasteurella last year and it just reset in late December.  That said, I got back more than I paid for it, and it’s been great peace of mind.  I feel better about taking her in if I notice something because it will likely be covered.

You go to the vet and hand your printed form to them when you first see the tech at intake.  The vet fills it out with the diagnosis, and you put the amount on the bottom and sign it.  Make sure you get an itemized receipt from the vet office as to how much for exactly what, and you fax in that with your claim form.  There is a $50/year/condition deductible (so if your bun has sniffles AND an ear infection that could total $100) but after that they cover 90% up to their coverage limit.  You get the check in about 3 weeks.

I have VPI for 1 out of 4 cats & 2 rabbits.  I’ve been very happy w/ it.  I got it b/c as my cats have gotten older, they have had some major health probs (diabetes, hyperthyroidism, allergies).  Unfortunately, 3 of my cats were too old to be covered. 

Everyone is correct about the “speuters”.  I love that term Wendz & plan to use it often   I did have 2 pre-existing conditions put on my plan:

Jess had gotten attacked by a bunny & required stitches & tx the wole 9 yards.

Leo has a dental issue.

However, both were lifted once I demonstrated that they didn’t have issues for 6 months.  I only go in for yearly exam and if problems arise (I guess that’s when most go to the vet).  So far for the past year, I have not had any health issues—-knocks on wood!  However, I know if Leo needs another major dental I will be happy to have the insurance.

Actually I complete the form myself, the diagnoses is on my bill.  I then fax the invoice w/ the claim form.  My cat had major procedures done for IBS & early kidney disease.  I spent about $1000 out of pocket and got about $400 back right away and we are still processing another portion of the claim.  I had to demonstrate that his condition was not pre-existing for 1 yr prior to tx.  My opinion is its been well worth the cost.  W/ a 5yr old that has never had medical care, you may find many things pop up.  Good Luck!

If you are looking into a lost cost spay/neuter you can check w/ your local Humane Society. Ours charges about $40 for males and a little more than females. BUT…also keep in mind you really need a follow up appt w/ a vet and the HS does not usually provide this. So it may be cheaper just to find a vet to do the spay/neuter because your follow up should be a part of that iniital surgery cost.
