She’s stuck in her cage 24 hours a day for…about three more days before we hit that glorious 7 day’s ’til freedom mark post-spay.  We’ve tried giving her toys, but she doesn’t seem interested in them and Meco NEVER lays in her littler boxes.  I think she’s bored and depressed but we’ve never had a toy – homemade or store bought – that she’s shown any interest in.

        Does anyone have any suggestions?

Honestly Coco didn’t move very much post spay either. She kind of looked just like that- depressed and thinking mean thoughts about Me.

Remember – It is for her OWN good to be restricted.

she doesn’t chew the heck out of that plastic bag? or is it just b/c she’s not feeling quite herself yet?

you can let her out sooner than 7 days, but only in a small, safe area and for a short time (maybe 10-20 minutes tops). it’s important that she cannot jump up onto anything and you can closely supervise the whole time.

that might make her feel a little bit better, even just a short bit of freedom.

The strange thing is, she’d been much more active until today. I mean, the first day she was slow. The second day less so and on and on until this morning when she’s been laying about like that. We took some cubes and “extended” her cage a bit today as a treat but she just seemed to go nuts trying to get out of it and I was afraid she was going to hurt herself. I think, unfortunately, shes an “in or out” bun – no inbetweenies for her.

For the record – she made that mess LAST NIGHT.  KNocked everything over out of boredum

man I’m interested to know if she leaves the plastic bag alone. I’d like to try that with Honey– seems it would make cleanup easier.

After Honey’s spay, she was quite lethargic, and wanted nothing to do with me. All she wanted to do was sleep– just like your bun.

Hope that makes you feel better, that is quite a sad picture, I have to say!

She never touches the plastic bags.

If we don’t get the corners pulled all the way out (They’re grocery bags, not litter pan bag so they’re vaugely the wrong size, but the stretch if you go slow) she digs at them until they lie flat, but she never so much as touches them to chew or anything. She’s not really a chewer though. The only thing she has a real interest in are the smooth power cords…So we bought foam pipe insulation and covered those up.

We started her off wiht just the plastic litter boxes, but M hates hates hates the ammonia smell in the pans when they’re dirty. So we tried to line the one upstairs to see how she took to it and she didn’t even notice. Then we added them to the ones in her cage. Works great. Just remove the bag, tie it shut (with the handles) and then toss it in the garbage. It makes cleaning her cage a breeze. We pick up the litter pans, rebag them…then dump off her blankets, sweep/vaccum that mess off of her cage floor, wash her dishes and put in a clean blanket and we’re good to go. We’ve got it down to about 10 minutes to completely clean, replace all food and water and litter

The best part is, the only reason she has two pans is because she decides when the pans are dirty.  And when the onein the other corner of her cage gets too dirty, she moves to her overflow pan and we empty the first one out and replace it .  Sometimes the pans are super grody and we clean them out first.  Othertimes, she uses it once and then demands that we clean it.

OHh!  and her mood.  We let her out of her cage and she hopped around for about 10 minutes, then layed down on her bed int he corner.  So we’ll leave her ther until she gets up again I guess. She isn’t going to hurt herself just laying there I suppose.  Plus we have a gate on the stairs and she doesn’t jump on the furniture, so other than the coffee table (which she may try to climb on if I let her out of my sight) she can’t get into anything too bad.)

Hurrah compliments on your self control.   Ruby I let her out for a little bit and found her jumped to the shelf in the other cage.  The next day I left her in a different cage.  She didn’t feel too good after that jump I could tell.  The next day she didn’t eat so I know she felt terrible.  But it was so hard to confine her. Poor little bun.

So I let her out for little while supervised.

awww, poor bunny. How about a radio or tv on so she can listen to something?

Maybe give her a toy that she can work on. Like fill an empty cardboard roll (without the paper of course) like toilet or paper towel roll (cut in half) with hay and bury a couple of yummy treats in the middle so she has to work on it.

Good for you though to make sure she is safe during her recovery. I also agree that having her in safe place to exercise should be okay. Do you have an xpen that you can attach to her cage to offer some running room with access to jumping?

Thanks for all of your responses.  We threw some hay and some lettuce with a few vexing slices of apple on top in her hanging ball.  She goes for the apple – because she can smell it – but she keeps coming up lettuce and hay. That seems to be occupying her for the time being.

She did get out for a little while today while we cleaned up her cage.  (Initially we were putting her in a very large cardboard box while we properly cleaned her cage (because she lets you touch NOTHING while she can see you.)

Sounds like she’s doing better! Keep us posted!
