I was thinking of getting that Peticure for Pancake.  Is it ok to use on rabbits and does it work as well as they say?  Thanks!

The PediPaws thing… we’ve had a few discussions about this with mixed points of view… the main concern it that it may startle certain rabbits. But we had one member who used it and her rabbit stayed still, but she said it was kind of time-consuming.

That was me.  It is time consuming, and what I end up usng it for is to round off the sharp edges after trimmer with a regular nail trimmer. It’s a lot faster that way and it does take some getting used to so practice on something like an orange stick used for human manicures. You really need to be careful that the unit doesn’t suck the bunny toe in so you have to hold it pretty securely.

Here are the previous discussions on it:

I just bought a regular dremel rotary tool and the sand paper stuff to go with it and it works great. That way it’s multi purpose and can be used for other things around the house as well. It was more expensive, but I feel like it’s better quality and it was definitely worth the money for us because we do use it for other household projects. Plus since it doesn’t have the casing around it you don’t want to worry about toes getting sucked in or anything. I like it for Wally’s dark nails especially because I have no clue where to cut them and this way I just do a bit at a time to smooth them out without hurting him or anything. It also plugs into the wall – so no batteries to replace either!

ok, after reading that, it sounds good and stuff, but I just need something to trim the nails fast. Pancake HATES getting his nails trimmed, so if I got that and it took a while to get it trimmed small, then I think he would go INSANE!!!!  Thanks a ton for the help though!!

Ok yet another stupid question along the same lines:

How often do you trim bun’s nails?? I’m so afraid to do it, we’ve only done it twice. Ruff hates to be on floor and I think it’s because of his nails. How do you know when to trim them??

Haha, we recommend monthly maintenance for the most part, but I just wait until I can hear his nails clicking when he walks on the tile!

I usually trim my bunny’s nails when I can see the nails poking out through the fur. It is important to trim your bunny’s nails as soon as they start getting long because nails can get caught on carpet and other things which can tear or rip the nail and potentially injure the bunny. Usually, as diigxmexnow mentioned, a monthly check and trimming of the nails works well.

What kind of floor is it that Ruff hates to be on? Most of my bunnies really dislike slippery floors like tile or linoleum, and will stay on the carpet at all times. I really only have one that likes the tile, and she will even do slidey binkies on it!

I trim about every six weeks. I find with more frequent trims you can cut less so you run a better chance of not cutting the quick; Also they get more used to it when you do it more often. We’ve had three rabbits come to our shelter with extremely long nails and it really makes their paws twist-and two had broken nails (which can become infected) so it’s VERY important to trim them often!

Ditto moobunny on the floors-most bunnies do not like lino or tiles-except to lay on in the summer!
