About a week ago or so, when I took all three buns to the vet for their checkups, they all appeared to be shedding a bit. The vet thought it could be from their winter coats being too heavy for the high house heat my hubby is firm about maintaining.

But I am concerned about Fiver in particular. He seemed really stressed by this last trip and now he’s got patches of fur coming out in strange spots. One (the largest) is on his back just over his shoulder blades to about mid back; now there’s new hair coming in underneath, so I know it’s not just coming out and leaving skin, but he was VERY angry about me brushing him with the love glove (a very gentle method) so I stopped doing it until he gets a little less upset by it. The doc showed me how easily his fur can come out and it distressed me because he was really losing a lot. I was afraid I would damage his skin with the glove…but I’m also worried that he’ll suck this stuff down grooming and it’ll cause problems later on.

I don’t think he’s going to put up with the tape roller, he gets grunty when he hears it running over the bed or his toys, much less anywhere near him.

He has a few streaks of shed running down his cheeks that are deeper furrows in the hair than others…but once again, no skin showing.

Could he have been stressed into a molt? I haven’t seen hair come off the bunnies like this since the last time they all blew their coats. 0_o

Also, I have upped their greens quotient to twice a day since they seem to be drying out in the low humidity despite how much water they drink. (I’d say we’ve increased 1-2 cups per day) It improved their bathroom habits and almost cured Pip of leaving her cecals, but I still find more left behind than I am comfortable with. She’s always been really messy about eating them and she tends to get a lot of ‘residue’ on her butt fur. And on the pen floor. And on the sleeping shelf. And..and…and…  I have to use quite a bit of vinegar cleaning her night pen. >.<

That doesn’t sound like a stress molt.   It is very important to groom her.  Also you may try plucking out the loose fur.  Regardless of her being upset go ahead and groom her.  That is a lot of hair to ingest.

Some may suggest adding petromalt as well.   Mine won’t eat it so I stick it on their front foot. They get angry but they do eat it off to clean themselves. So angry or not at least they are getting what is necessary.    Grooming and petromalt.  I dont’ use petromalt a whole lot but when I notice pearl poops I know it is time to try it.

Cotton doesn’t like being groomed but I do it anyways.  I dread when his next shed or molt is coming. He isn’t even shedding and is fussy and keeps jumping onto me so I have to catch him.  He is trying to avoid being groomed. Little brat.  Buns are something else.  Just dont’ know what is good for them I tell you.

Honestly that sounds like Cocos last molt – I referred to it as her rabbit toupee – that whole circle on her back was the first to go…then downwards.

She would only allow me one intentional groom a day – in the morning, when she was blissed out after her salad…And I plucked like crazy, as she doesn’t like the long smooth strokes. Took about a month for her to get through her whole coat. I also cut back on her pellets and really upped the hay offered.

I’m old fashioned and always had luck with the Petromalt, as BT suggested.

What about just wetting your hands and wiping Fiver down? I know Spockie had about 4 sheds a year it seemed, and while he didn’t get patches, he just seemed to shed forever. He got pearls from ingesting but nothing more serious and the Petromalt cleared it up with one dose. It sounds like Fiver’s just got a regular big molt going on. They just went to the vet, so I think you’re fine.

I doubt it’s stress. Last Fall Fiver was feeling stressed, so he emailed me and asked me to order him a pizza and a six pack to be delivered, so that’s how he copes with stress. No hair loss. (Hare loss?)
