        Hi Everyone,

Just rushing out to work and have a couple of questions regarding Poppys recovery. She was spayed just 24hours ago and we brought her home yesterday evening. I was quite surprised with how good she was. Poor Henry looked unwell for a good few days but Poppy seemed totally grand. She was eating lots of veg and pellets and was pooping and peeing within a couple of hours of being home.

I asked at the vet for pain meds but he was very reluctant to give me any as he said you need a good balance and pain meds can affect their recovery as then she may hop around and exert herself in the first few days. She got pain relief obviously during the op which is probably wearing off about now. He asked me to ring this morning to let him know how she is doing as it is a Saturday and he wont be open until Monday. He was going to ring my local vet and organise a prescription for me to pick up if she seemed in pain. But anyway i told him how she is doing and he said it sounds like she is doing well and doesnt think she needs pain meds. He said too much pain relief can also cause ileus? which i think may be gi stasis?

Anyway i just want to know what ye think? She has been grinding her teeth abit this morning but she is still eating so i guess she is not in too much discomfort. I really hope she wont be in too much pain as the pain meds go out of her system Any insight would be great …thanks.

i’m glad to hear Poppy is doing so well already (you’re going to have your hands full with this one Luna… even post-surgery she sounds more alert than my two! lol!)

i like getting pain meds just in case. even if you don’t have to use them, it’s better to have them on hand. especially with a weekend coming up, you just don’t know how a bun is going to recover. you can spay ten females and you will get ten different recovery periods. the vet is right in that too much pain relief can cause tummy trouble, but also, if a bun is in too much PAIN that will stop them from eating and you’re in the same boat… tummy trouble. there is a risk of them feeling no pain so the bun overdoes it, then injures the incision… because of this it’s a good idea to keep the bunny confined for at least 3-4 days, up to a week based on how she is progressing. i’d rather have a bun in minimal pain and confined, then not confined, but in too much pain to move. does that make sense?

it’s really your call at this point. if she’s grinding her teeth, i know i would want to give her some pain meds… there is always the risk she might stop eating as the day goes on. so is your regular vet open today, and do they have your prescription?

No i dont have the prescription  now because the vet said that from the sound of things she is doing great but there is an emergency vet that does his after hours clinic in university college dublin so i will keep an eye on her. She is still munching away on food and using her litter tray to poop and pee. Plus afew minutes ago she tossed her toilet paper roll stuffed with hay up in the air. I have a feeling that this new girl of mine is quite resilient. You should have seen her yesterday when we picked her up at the vets. She was very alert and bright. Poor Henry had big bulgy watery eyes and looked so down in the dumps that my heart went out to the poor little lad. I guess thats boys though… not the greatest of patients. not very sympathetic when we are sick but when they are sick ….boy do we know it! He He Sorry to the male members of the forum!

I wish my vet had just given me the pain meds so i would have peace of mind. I guess he was afraid i would abuse them or administer when they werent needed. Oh fingers crossed for her!

i hear you. i guess my method is to listen to the reasoning, acknowledge them, and then ask for meds anyways. i’m kinda cheeky like that tho… ;o)

Well it is now the evening and Poppy had her surgery 35 hours ago. She is getting on so well. She has even started being a messy pants again. She wolfs down any veg i give her and there are still plenty of poops and wet spots in her litter box.

im feeling really annoyed with myself though…i tried to have a look at her wound, lifted her up using one hand to support her front area and the other to support her rump. That was fine but as soon as i tried to look at the wound she struggled so i snuggled her in close to me and petted her for about 5mins and then tried it again and she struggled again. I had to put her down at that stage. Im just so annoyed. Does anyone have any tips on the best way to get a look at her wound site? Now im afraid that trying to have a look could have done more damage than good as her struggling might have stretched the area…. grrr

It was quite funny after though because i was trying to get a look at the wound without picking her up. I spotted my opportunity when i caught a glimpse of her grooming herself. So i went over, kneeled and I took the bum in the air/ head to the ground stance. Anyway my head was right down near her back legs and all of a sudden she started grooming me…the cutest licks all over my face. Needless to say i got kinda distracted and didnt get a look.

Please, please does anyone have any advice on how to hold her in a postition that wont cause her any discomfort? Thanks.

just be quick… that was a good idea to look while she was sitting up. if she will stand up to take a treat, you can have her stand up and then take a quick peek that way.

Yay….I finally got a look at Pop’s wound. I held some kale over her head and she stood up to get it. It was grand. It was nice and clean and dry with no swelling or redness. Thats a relief At least i know how to get her to show me from now on! thanks for the advice beka

Good to hear recovery is going well. That’s great she groomed you, she must be feeling ok. You may have dealt with all the hormone before they had a chance to run rampant. Be interesting to see her future behaviours but if she licked 35 ours after spay surgery, I think things are looking good!

That really frustrates me, I just don’t get why vets send animals home after major surgery with no pain meds

Anyways I’m glad she’s recovering well now and you got a peek at the incision too! Sounds like shes doing well

Thanks guys…Well it is now 3days later and she is still doing very well. Her appetite is huge and she seems so affectonate now. She licked me on the finger last night for the first time. Henry was going crazy to be let out so i let him out yesterday morning and he went straight up to her and they were licking each other faces. There is a very small gap between her enclosure and one of our couches and he squeezed himself in there and she bit him. Each time he would reverse and then go back in again and she would give him a little nip. im not sure if it was aggressive or playing behaviour but she seemed quite content chewing on a big clump of fur she had taken out. Anyway i went to lift him up and put him back in his cage and he growled at me He wasnt impressed that i saved him from gettting more bites. He just wanted to get into her cage im guessing. He seems quite besotted by Poppy!

I see that all the time at the shelter-for some reason they love to squeeze inbetween the crevices between the cages; And the rabbit in the cage seems to take that as an aggressive gesture and no matter how much they like each other, the one in the cage usually tries to nip the other! I wouldn’t worry too much about why she did it, more that you don’t allow it to continue to happen so his feelings don’t get hurt and it damages the relationship

Wow – Thats a GREAT recovery. Coco looked like hell for three days before she started acting like herself again – but she was an older bun when she went in this summer.

Coco also loves the “wedge” between the wall and the Maze Haven. In fact, when it got tooo close, I heard her over there trying to pull it back with her teeth so she could squeeze back in there…..

Aw poor Henry …. i think i hurt his feeling more by removing him and putting him back in his cage. I since blocked off that side of her cage with a pillow and a wooden log roll so he cant get in.

When he goes to greet her now she sticks her head down and kind of closes her eyes. He sometimes gives her a little lick but mainly he chins her head and leaves half a million poops all over the house.Seriously, I dont know how one netherland dwarf can produce so many at one time I dont think he is the most affectionate bun in the world. He likes to lap up affection but when it comes to giving it back he is abit standoffish!

It is day 6 now and Poppy is doing great and seems really eager to get out. do ye think i should wait another day or would it be alright to give her floor time now?

i think she can have some playtime now. you might want to keep it short and supervise during that time. i’d still discourage her from jumping on anything high like a couch or bed… and you’ll want to continue to keep an eye on her incision (once a day is fine) for the next week…

I let her out …. She was BOLD BOLD BOLD If she wasnt chewing the carpet, she was trying to get in behind the dvd unit ( we obviously didnt bunny proof very well),and she stole Henrys veg and ran in behind the couch with it !!! She did afew binkys….so different to Henrys binkys. He kind of throws himself in the air, twists his legs and lands in the exact same place. Poppy binkys and she lands in the opposite direction. Head where bum was and vice versa….it looks really funny. I put her back in after about 20mins and she went crazy ripping up paper and pushing her ceramic bowl up and down the lino… she is so funny.

Is it possible for two bunnies that are such opposites to get on and co-habit together? Henry is very quiet, really neat and tidy, not mad about food(he never eats his veg until we are gone to bed)

Poppy is noisy, destructive, poops everywhere, so untidy and gobbles down veg as soon as we give it to her. Would hate to see henry not getting any veg

she still is experiencing hormone fluctuations too. and some of what you might have seen was pent-up energy from being confined. as she gets older and settles you’ll see her real personality. and it is possible for two opposite rabbits to become great friends. most anything is possible with buns… sometimes it just takes a little more work.
