I just got my bunny, Bella 5 days ago. She is a holland lop and she is probably only 6-8 weeks old. .I just started to litter train her yesterday and she really doesn’t seem to get the point! It’s not like I expect immediate results, but she isn’t making ANY progress whatsoever! I read several places to place the litterbox in her favorite corner, but she doesnt seem to have one. Every time I move the litterbox because it seems she favors a different corner more, she just switches corners. She wants REALLY badly to run around outside her cage and I feel terrible because I can’t let her until i get her litter trained!

Also, I don’t know how to reinforce her to go to the bathroom there.

        I’m just really frustrated already.

        Please help!

Well, at that age litter training is going to take some patience since she is a baby and also she has only been at your house for 5 days so you need give it more time.

Are you putting litter or bedding the cage as well? If you are that is probably confusing her as well.

Are you putting hay in the litter box?

You may have to keep moving the litter box or adding a second until she understands.

You really cannot speed up this process at her young age either – you will need to continue to be patient with her and that is all you can do. Litter training requires diligence on your part and lots of patience but she will soon learn.

Also, when they are really young, a standard litter box may have too high sides. Maybe try with a shallow tray then replace with other litter box later.
A shallow tray makes it easy for them to get in and out without feeling entrapped. Also, easy to see/smell the soiled litter and learn that is the spot to go.

Well here’s how it’s currently going…she goes and sits in her litterbox sometimes but I’m not sure if she gets the point that that’s where she is supposed to go to the bathroom, since she still goes in other places in her cage. I put some of her poo in the litterbox and try to reinforce her by saying good girl and petting her…although I’m not sure if that works on bunnies or just dogs…haha. I also put some hay in the litterbox.

Is there anything more I could do to help her understand it’s not just a toy and that she is supposed to go to the bathroom there?

Do you put some urine soiled litter in there too? Or a bit of paper soaked in urine?

For a time, maybe put the hay only in the litter box, ie. don’t have it elsewhere in a feeder just yet. She could be at the feeder pooping to her hearts delight not knowing any differently. Don’t know if that’ll really help, just another thing to try I guess.

I’ve got a baby holland as well, he’s 10 weeks old. He’s in a big cage, with a litterbox and his food bowel and a little water bottle. Right now the litterbox (it takes up 1/3 of the cage) is the only place that has litter and hay in it. I’ve got him to consistently pee in the box with about 1/2 his poops ending up there as well. He’s starting to get it, but like the others said, you only have a baby, so it will take some time. I’d reccomend you start a schedule with your baby. Guppy is in his cage during the day, until I get home from work. At that time I let him out to play and get some excercise in his xpen setup (his cage is in here too). Then right before I got to bed, he goes back in the cage (usually around midnight). So he has about 6 hrs of playtime where he can get excercise and he still learns how to use to his litterbox. It’s hard for me to keep him confined and I know he doesn’t like he, but I’d rather have a bunny thats litter trained then one that isnt.

                  Hopefully that helped
