Hey. Just wondering if it’s ok for her to chew on pinecones. I think it is, but I just wanted to doulbe check first.

Hi Kayla! Yes pine cones are O.K. but they must be completely dried and free of pesticides/insectides etc. so just be careful which ones you select. And since bunnies should not have nuts or seeds (too much starch and can cause an impaction), make sure that the pine cone is free of them.

Also, watch out for those scented ones – I found some in a store and since they were pine scented I almost bought them until I realized that they probably aren’t supposed to smell THAT good

Hee hee Moobunnay. Too true, it is easy to tell when it is the cinnamon scent but it would be hard to tell with pine scented pine cones.

I have a ton of them that I will eventually start selling when I am up and running.

Pinecones have to be washed and then cooked for several hours to ensure nothing is still on them. Sap can be toxic to buns so cooking them will get rid of the sap.

Ok, sounds good. Thank you. Do I boil them or put them in the oven? These are Pinecones from out yard that have been collected this summer so they’re pretty dried out free of pesticides. We don’t use pesticides or any chemicals in our yard. We only use all natural if we have to.

I read about someone who makes rabbit toys (on ebay) She boils the pinecones to sterilize them…what do you guys think of that? Would they need to be dried out again then?

Also if the pine cone is completely open (you know how they drop seeds and open up) does that mean it’s totally dry?

lol. i’m so weary of pine cones. the only ones we have in my yard are the long, narrow ones that are tightly closed together. not the big, fat open “xmas-like” pinecones… does anyone BUY theirs? if so, where do you get them? i’m so scared to purchase them b/c i don’t know what’s on them. has anyone had good experiences with buying them in a store? and i hate to ask store employees b/c i know in most cases they have no clue about these things…

Haha. I’ve never bought them so I’m not sure. They have them at Petco and I wonder if those would be safe.

I would assume that they would need to dry after they’re boiled. These ones are completely opened up and seed free. I don’t know what kind of tree they’re from. We have so many different kinds. I think they’re from red pines… but I could be totally wrong.

Are the ones in your yard the green ones? Cuz if they are, I wonder if they would open up if left in a warm dry place…?

i know nothing about the whole pinecone thing… all of ours outside look like this… but even more tightly closed… kinda “dog-turdy”… lol!

if i brought those inside would they dry out and end up looking like this…

what would the whole process entail… and is it even worth it if i can instead just go buy some safe ones at the store?

haha. It’s ok, i’m not a pinecone expert either. Those pinecones are from two different kinds of pine trees. So, to answer your question, no, they won’t look exactly like that when you bring them in. However, they would open up a little more. And unless there is only one kind of pinecone that would be safe, I would say that those are ok. I would just boil them like everyone’s been saying and then let them dry for a while where it’s warm so they open up. You can try putting them under a lamp. I would say that It would be worth your time if your rabbit likes them because you would know exactly where they’re coming from and that you prepared them correctly.
