I have a question about my dwarf rex .  I had him to the vet last week and they both seemed fine.  He hopped on my chest and snuggled against my neck last night an a noise occurred outside that frightened him and he had a substance that look like cranberry sauce that he passed (I think maybe the anal glands??) and the substance was on my tee shirt and I wonder if I need to take him back to the vet?? This could be normal as far as I know everything is new to me.  The vet thinks they are both females and the bunny expect at the pet store thinks I have one of each.  I have to take them back to the vet in 5 weeks to recheck and then make spay or neuter appointments

Was it definitely red or just the consistancy of cranberry sauce?

it was cranberry color and that consistency also.  He (or she)  iw eating fine and hoppy around like crazy and playing with toys no other symptoms

Hrmmmm…I’ve never heard of anything like that…Like it sort of sounds like cecals but they wouldn’t be that color….

              Anyone else wager a guess???

If you still have your shirt with some of it left on it, I would bring the shirt with you to the vet. I have never heard of red poo. So my only solution is to show your vet. Mine have never done that even when scared. Anyone else?

I am drawing a blank of this one.  I would ask your vet about it and see if they have any possibilities.

Cleaning the anal glands is pretty smelly, so I imagine if it was the waxy substance from there, you would know it!!! Are you absolutely sure the bun passed this red stuff? Could she/he have had something on their foot or fur you weren’t aware of? Definately get it looked at if you still have it on the t-shirt. I’m totally guessing here, but I think if there was blood in the faeces, it would be a brown/black colour, but blood in urine would be more a brighter red. Again, I’m guessing and don’t want to alarm you! I would take it in sooner thatn 5 weeks myself. What did you have done at the vets last week, just a first check over? If you do take them in again sooner, maybe you can have some vaccinations or something aswell, since it’d be an extra visit. Hope you get some clarity on this!

that’s very strange. gross i know, but did you catch any smell when it passed? did it smell like feces… or?

were you able to call your vet and ask what they thought?

the vet has no idea what it is, the bun again looks great and is active and all the signs of good health the vet says. He is eating real good and running around and playing and so things seem to be fine. I may never know but s long as he checks out fine I am happy with that. these bunnies are so much fun and they love to be petted and run over to get their pets and treats. I am trying to learn more about them and their body language. this little rex was a real sweetie and loved to give licks but he is getting a little more nervous and I think it is time to neuter. will a buck be more loveable after neutering does anyone know. they are still doing great with the litter box not an accident this week so they are really smart and catch on to things so quick. like the work “treat” it starts a riot and i better have one if i say it. it just has been fun getting to know them

aw that’s great that you’re enjoying them! they are so much fun, i agree. when i say “treat” mine start jumping over each other, it looks like a shark feeding frenzy on the discovery channel! lmao!

i think you’re right that you might never really know what caused that weird incident. keep an eye on them both as you’ve been doing.

as far as neutering, males can be done at about 3-4 months when their testicles descend. neutering will remove the hormones and should lead to a calmer bunny. that being said, most adult buns do not enjoy being picked up and handled a lot. they are prey animals so it is just not in their nature. it usually works best when you interact with them on their terms, on the floor or if they come up to you.

I had the bunnies back to the vet to see if Snowflake is ready to be neutered but he is not ready because he has undecended testicles and the vet wants to wait for them to descend because it is just easier on everyone. The vet says Butterscotch hasn’t developed male parts yet and she wonders if he is a she. I am just beside myself they are in a pet play pen together so I need to know. They are together in a pet play pen and they love each other and I hope it stays that way. I bring Snowflake back 1/13/2009 and hopefully he will be ready then. The vet says they both look great and I am doing a good job with them. They both use the litter box and they are so cute! Butterscotch licked my face today I was so surprised and they bink all over the room when i get them out of the pen so i think they are happy

I’m glad they are doing well! I’m a bit concerned about the vet not knowing the sex of your bunny-if your vet was examingin Butterscotch in person and couldn’t tell, He may very well be a good vet, but I would start phoning around to see if there are other vets in the area that are a bit more rabbit-savvy.

I AGREE! they are not wee little baby bunnies so the vet should be able to tell without a doubt at this point what sex they are. i’m not too sure about you continuing to keep them together until you get a definitive answer on sex! can get ahold of another vet for a second opinion?

I have to laugh, my first 2 buns were 7-8 months and several vets were still at odds over whether they were girls or boys. Pringles wasn’t settled until she went in for a neuter and ended up with a spay. Daisy was so shy, it wasn’t finalized that she was a he until the 3rd vet.

I’m so glad I’m not the only person that has happened to! We took Warri to the vet to get sexed, the vet said he was a she. So he goes in for a spay, goes through the surgery and OOPS no girl parts in there. His testicles hadn’t dropped yet, so he had to go back about a month later for a neuter.

My husband had bunnies when he was a child so he is enjoying my bunnies and he says they are both boys. Heloves these little ones because they are so gentle and give a lot of attention back, they really seem happy and we are trying real hard to keep them happy and comfortable. I am still amazed how smart they are! I didn’t realize how hard it is to sex them. I guess I need to look for vet #3 because the first two can’t be definate. I know Snowflake is a boy it is apparent now but his testicles are not decended so the neuter is on hold next appointment is January 13 to check if he is ready. I hope so but will wait as long as it takes for him to be ready I am a little bit nervous about the surgery but it seems like it works out ok, and they are better for having it done since they are house pets.

My bun was sexed by a rabbit savvy vet and the breeder he came from and both said it was a male but still not one hundred percent sure because no testicles had descended and he was 5 months. well it ended up he had developed his testicles but they were not going to drop and he was known as a cryptorchid (i think thats how its spelled) where his testicles will not descend. so the vet had to “go in after them” lol! so maybe that could be whats happening too.

You may be right and that would be the best thing then they can both be taken care of and they love each other so that should last. We enjoy them so much we got some wood stove pelletts today now I hope they take to them and continue to use their litter box. They have been so good only one or two messes outsoide the litter box in their room and they never do anything outside their room they always go back and fine the box. I really wanted at least one girl maybe I can rescue one from the Humane society I had no idea they had them there. I got mine from a wonderful animal park in the northern part of the state and they told me how to care for them and gave me lots of supplies so things have been going well for mand the buns. I still cannot believe how much fun they are and what a joy they are.

everyone’s bunnies are so cute! Pepper is adorable! Mine are very small Butterscotch is under two pounds and Snowflake is 2 1/2 lbs. One day I would like a bigger one also I have to study about the lop rabbit and try to learn breeds personality traits. The two I have are real cute and have great personalities but that is just pure luck.
