Oh scary! I’m glad he seems to be doing better now. Probably not a bad idea to get him checked out, just in case there’s something going on you can’t see, but if he’s eating and being active it’s probably not an emergency. We rolled a tennis ball at Noelle once and she ran out to meet it and got bopped square in the nose. She got this stunned “the hell” look and then started rubbing at her nose ever so carefully. I felt so bad but it was so funny at the same time. No blood or anything though, so it wasn’t a big scare like with Pepper.

My bf dropped Charlie once and he smacked him face into the coffee table (bad bf)! He sat stunned for a little while then groomed himself continuously, exactly like Pepper, then was normal. He wasn’t hurt but he sure did milk it!

Aww – poor Charlie! Bad bf indeed! If it was just a bonk with some rubbing I wouldn’t worry about the vet all, it’s just the blood that makes me a little bit more nervous about poor Pepper. But I wouldn’t be too worried – although I know it’s hard not to be – given that he’s starting to behave normally. They sure do know how to look pathetic though!

Just be careful not to give him too many treats. I know you feel bad about it, but resist the guilt!

Kokanee was always super super active and equally clumsy. She once lept from the top part of the condo and bonked her head on the way down ( I had it open to feed and she decided she wanted OUT!). She groomed and groomed and shook her head. I took her to the vet. The only thing was the blood result which showed she’d had an injury and was recovering.

Since there was blood a vet trip would be a good idea. I mean, if we bonk our noses and get a bit of blood not biggie really. But with buns if they have an injury it can abscess. I shouldn’t think it’s an emergency specially if he’s eating and running around; When are you back home? If it’s fairly soon, I’m sure just a quick check over with your regullar vet would be sufficient; and eyes on him until then to ensure an emergency vet trip isn’t in order.

I would also use a very cold washcloth, wrung out so only damp, and gently press the wounded area where the blood was. It will coagulate and fresh blood and maybe clean it a little bit. I think just a little washing of the area will help to prevent germs from getting in there. Call the vet this morning and ask her what she advises.

A rabbit’s ears will not tell you his or her true temperature either. The only way to do that is what a thermometer because you want the core temperature.

I’m glad Pepper is okay.

what a scare! ill ditto everyone, keep an eye on him. if you’re in doubt at all, take him to your vet when you get home.

Poor little bun.  Glad to hear she is back to normal.  She may be a little more cautious now.  But with buns you just never know.  Doesnt’ sound like she is cautious now if she is running and doing binky’s.  

PeppersMama – I hear you about the thermometer. I know I thought no way could I do that! They’d freak, and I’d freak. It’s not the most pleasant thing to do – stick a little thing in their rear…yeah..no…so I understand anyone’s reluctance; However, one day I brought in Bailey because she just wasn’t acting right. Her ears were normal, she didn’t seem like she was in immediate danger,but she was just a bit more low key, and I had an appointment for that afternoon so I figured I would just take her in then.

Her ears were still normal to the touch when we got there, but when they took her rectal temp it showed she was going into shock, and it soon became apparent that she was fighting for her life. (Note: She had serious illness issues, so I’m not trying to scare you about your situation right now) I just want to take this opportunity to let everyone know that it may be a good idea to have your vet show you how to take your bunny’s rectal temp at the next vet visit.

If I hadn’t been avoiding it, and would have known how to do it, and taken the temperature earlier in the day, I may not have put her life at risk. The rectal temp can really help you determine the health of your bunny.

Yes – doing the temperature in the butt thing is a bit scary at first – its a good idea to have a vet show you how because it is something that can be dangerous if not done correctly.

My husband has also bonked Henri in the head a few times, and Henri seems none the worse for it currently. He had a drawer hit his head once, was accidentally kicked in the head once (the husband was trying to push a futon into place and slid backwards instead of the futon sliding back, and his foot slid into Henri’s cage, which then hit Henri in the head – Henri was just trying to supervise!) Both times he just appeared a bit startled, and then looking like he was trying to groom his nose, but didn’t touch his paws to his face. Both times he got rushed to the vet but ended up needing nothing but a quick nail trim (so it turned into a double bad day for Henri!)

Speaking of head bonks…today my husband was backing his car out of the garage, and went to put his arm behind my seat’s head rest and smacked ME right in the face, to which I did a very good impression of a bunny disapproval
