So I was just washing up a head of lettuce as part of my new pre-wash, rip, and bag routine that I’m testing out – and at the base of one of the heads of lettuce the leaves had all these little bug critters on them.  Most of them were dead but a couple were still kinda moving around.  I was extra careful to make sure to rinse them all off, but am wondering if there’s any reason I shouldn’t give that batch of lettuce to the bunnies?  Pretty much all of the leaves except the ones on the very outside had a few bugs each. They just looked like little aphid type things.  Pretty creepy.  Any thoughts?

I think that should be fine – I find bugs in my lettuce quite a bit – I figure it’s just natural since lettuce is grown outside.

I find some often in my Romaine in the summer. Just make sure to rinse the lettuce well.

Okay – I figured it was probably safe, but just wanted to make sure! Thanks!

yup, that’ll happen. fortunately, everything i have seen has been dead besides a few lady bugs who then twittered around my kitchen…

We got a couple of buggy batches of organic romaine- which makes sense I guess- no pesticides.  But have not noticed it on non organic romaine.  And as long as you rinse it off and discard any areas that look eaten/chewed you should be fine.  If fact it probably would not hurt them to eat a bug or 2 but the bugs could possibly be bitter or taste bad and then create a reluctance to eat romaine.  I just follow the rule that if I would not eat it, then I won’t feed it to the buns (unless it is something healthy that is disgusting to me but other people would eat).  Wild bunnies probably eat worse stuff all the time than buggy romaine- but then of course they are not worried about getting bugs in hay, bedding, etc…

Ohhh this reminds me of a terrible story that happened to me…I had chopped some green pepper and eaten it. I went back later to have more, chopped it up and found a bug in it!! I’m not scared of bugs, in fact I have to go after spiders if they are in the apartment becuase Dave won’t but gaaaawwwd I felt sick after that

Oh K&K, I am the resident spider squisher here. My daughter hates them and won’t go near it even to crush it. I could see her standing about ten feet away tossing phone books at it.

I once found some kind of slug or snail in some organic red leaf lettuce last summer. I was lucky I didn’t hurl my cookies after that, how gross! >_<

Eww, I’ve never seen a bug in my lettuce! Guess it’s cause I buy the unorganic regular grocery-store stuff… You all are bravery than me. I’d do the “Eww gross buggy” dance. And then the practical half of my brain would kick in, and I’d have to close my eyes while I cut the “contaminated” side off…hoping I didn’t take off a finger with it… (You can tell I’ve had this argument with myself over other things…)

OK how would you like to eat an apple and discover you’ve eaten part of a worm!  That is so disgusting but happened to me once.  Now I always slice apples before I eat them.  I have also found aphids in lettuce before too and in broccoli.  All organic.  Just need to wash the heck out of it.  I did throw the broccoli out because those critters were hiding in all the trees and I just couldn’t get them all out! Ick!

Oh no!! I saw that happend to someone in school once! Very gross!!

Although, umn, when I was three, I dug up a bunch of worms and ate them on purpose-so I’m told LOL

I have been accused of eating dirt out of houseplant when I was little, but I have no memory of this alleged event. My lettuce wasn’t organic, which is why the bugs kinda surprised me, and there were just so yucky! I definitely do the yucky bug dance and try to get Jason (the boyfriend) to kill spiders, moths, etc. – but his theory is that they don’t bother him so if they bother me so much I should get rid of them. I say if they don’t bother him he should do it to spare me the discomfort – but I always lose. So gross.

We used to plant a garden when I was growing up. I was the kid who was always out in the yard, pulling up the baby carrots the minute the greens poked through the surface and seeing that they were thin and white, would put them back in the ground and announce to my folks, “Nope, not done growing yet.” You think that didn’t irk the heck out of them. >.<
But once the veggies had been fully grown and kept from my nosy attempts at scrutiny, I would pull them all up and eat them, dirt and all. Back then, I think, dirt wasn’t so ‘dirty’.
A friend of mine and I once went out and ate just about everything in the garden. Like a couple of locusts. We’d even pulled up the beets but didn’t have the stomach left for them, but my folks made us eat them anyway. Raw beets with dirt sauce….ewww!

Nice revenge by your parents! Along the lines of, ‘Well, you started it, so I guess you’d better finish it!’

BunnyMuffin, my BF will deal with buggies for me…But it took me until at least a year into our relationship for me to realize he might actually be more afraid of spiders than I am! He’s just been acting brave to be nice to me!

Haha – well we’re nearly 6 years in and I know he’s not afraid of bugs, he just thinks I should take care of my own bug issues! We have the same discussion if we need to call to order food – I hate the phone which makes him think I should do it for practice, but I think that since he doesn’t mind phoning people that he should just take care of it…and then I always lose anyway… ~sigh~ My life is so rough… 😛

That’s very nice of your BF to put on the brave front though – I think he deserves some sort of prize!

Gross. I always wash wash wash ever since being in Blackpool YEARS ago and my toasted cheese sarnie came with salad…and spidery lettuce. And if that wasn’t enough, i was out for dinner with a “potential beau” and my garlic mushrooms came with salad garnish a la greenfly. I mean how hard is it to wash your lettuce before serving to paying customers. (we both had the garlic shrooms so all was well in that respect. 🙂 (i probably wash TOO much, actually you’d probably class it as scrubbing, as by the time i’ve finished with the lettuce it’ all shredded and broken) We went shopping today… needless to say we bypassed the lettuce aisle.

I hear ya.  A firend and i were cooking dinner one evening and i did my usual of ignoring him laughing at me checking every stalk of broccoli, he tittered not when i pulled out a tree, shoved it in his face with a caterpillar peering out the top.

MAAANY years ago when I was a teen, my family went to a large chain restaurant who shall remain nameless (but they do have a large yellow sign with red lettering) and about halfway through my salad, there is a dead bee staring me in the face. 0_o I can’t tell you how many nightmares I had of swallowing a stinger. >.< (I've been stung enough that I'm not a big fan of bees.)

Needless to say, since my folks were Depression babies, we simply read the chef the riot act, got the rest of our meal for free and I was forced to eat it anyway. We did send the salad back though.

Can you imagine the state of my stomach at that point? Who could eat after something like that??
