Today I noticed that the white of Booker’s eye seemed red and maybe a little goopy. I made a vet appointment for tommorow morning, so the Doc will be able to tell me for sure, but do you think it is an eye infection ? It almost looks to me like she scratched it.

Also, if it is an eye infection do you think that they would treat it with oral antibiotics or topical ointment ?

It really does depend on the vet as far as treatment – I’m thinking though that most likely it may be a topical ointment – eye drop or eye ointment.

Let us know what the vet says. Poor Booker!

Could be an infection or maybe just some irritation. But making the vet appointment is great, they’ll know what to do. Eye drops aren’t hard to administer to a rabbit either so that’s lucky!

Typically eye problems like a scratch or infection are treated with topical meds (but there can be exceptions to this- pain meds for bad injury and or pain and swelling or severe infection).  Topical meds are applied right to the source of the problem- so they tend to be pretty effective.  And depending is causing the redness and discharge will determine the medicine used.

For example- I use antiobiotic drops with dexamethasone for my cats eyes- she sometimes has goopy eyes and redness and it has been determined that it is not an injury (she has had stain applied to her eyes a couple different times).  And her eyes get better on the drops- so when her tear ducts get inflammed her natural tears cause a brown gook in the corner of her eyes.  It is not harmful to her eyes, and the cause in her case is believed to be genetic- small tear ducts/not normally functioning tear ducts.  If she has a scratch on her eye though- using these meds with the steroid (dex) would inhibit the healing of an injury or scratch and might cause scarring.

If they do put your bunny on eye meds be sure to as them to demo how to apply the first dose.  It is pretty easy and I am sure most of us here can talk you thru it- but seeing it first hand can help a lot!

So we are back from the vet. He said he wasn’t 100% sure that it was an eye infection, he thought i looked like possible self inflicted trauma. He said that it is very minor and gave us some drops to put in to help clear up the little bit of redness and prevent infection. So one dose a day for 5 days. If it isn’t looking better by then or starts to look worse we are supposed to go back.

Now the hard part, getting her to sit still while I try to put in the drops. Oh dear.
