I figured I would post here to get some input…..

I work for a non-profit behavioral health agency in the Philly area.  Our in-home detention facility is looking for community service opportunities.  I had suggested various animal shelters.  I once had a grant program for middle school students and we cleaned cages, walked dogs, gave animals baths.  I was hoping to find something similar for these kids.  It’s sad b/c they are all supervised; 1 adult for every 2-3 teens.  So far SPCA & Philly Paws all said NO.  Any suggestions…does anyone have any hook ups I could use.

        Thanks!

Yowsa, that’s sad they all said no. Have you tried smaller independent rescues, maybe ones for specific breeds? How about a horse rescue? I don’t know a single one that says no to an extra hand cleaning out stalls. Sorry I don’t have any contacts for you.

Unfortunately there can sometimes be issues with insurance/liability for non-employees in case of bites, scratches and exposure to animals with unknown health history.

Do you have a local dog park? (something that is not privately owned).  Our local dog park does have the township that does some work- but it could use a good thorough scooping now and again (even though owners are supposed to pick up after their dogs), and I know that in the spring they need help raking and spreading out wood chips.

Oh that really sux! We’d totally have you at either of our shelters! We are actually wanting to set up with one of the programs here for developmentally delayed youth to come work with some of our horses. It usually benefits both tremendously.
The dog shelter I volunteered with had a program where prisoners would come and do some of our hard work for the day, they had people with them to supervise them, they got to go out for the day, do something new and play with some dogs too.

My mom worked in mental health her whole life, so I’ll see if she has any tips or programs to let you know about.

I just sent out a bunch of emails to smaller shelters….so I’m hoping to get something started.  To be honest, I get a bit ticked off b/c these are the animals that need the help.  These shelters often don’t even have enough people to walk dogs….it makes me so angry.  I understand liability, etc…the way we got around that b/f was a separate assent form and including an education component w/ the program.  I’ve offered the same w/ this program…but no luck yet.

If anyone has any links to smaller shelters, rabbit places, or horse homes….I’ll work it.  I will look into the horse thing, but I really have no idea where the horses are in Philly?  I’ll also look into the dog park.  Maybe there is one near our office that our kids can be responsible for cleaning and stocking up poop bags….

                Thanks
