        Hi  im Amanda. Im new to this forum but have reading for awhile now.  I have four pets, 2 cats and 2 rabbits. I have had Aspen for about four months now. A couple weeks ago i decided to get aspen a friend. So we have pancakes now. They are not friends yet lol Anyway pancakes came to me with REALLY long nails and they didnt know if he was a boy or girl so im assuming he isnt fixed. I am going to wait till i get him fixed to really start the bonding experience. For now their cages are just next to each others. I was wondering what the average cost to get rabbits fixed is? Also, i trim aspens nails, but pancakes really goes nuts when i try and im afraid to stress him/ her out. Is it possible to stress him out by doing this? Well looking forward to hearing from other rabbit lovers. Thanks

              LOL Welcome here! Glad you decided to join up!!

              You can stress rabbits by trimming their nails but if they’re really long you may want to start working on them now. Do you trance or do the burrito method for trimming?

              Speuter can range from 50-300$ depending on where you live. It’s wise to phone around and get quotes while your checking out vets to find a good fit. I’m sure theres a member in your area who can recommend a vet too!

                I have tried both methods but he doesnt lay still or “go in a trance” . maybe i should just have the vet do it or wait till he is a little more comfortable with me?

                  Welcome to BB!

                  If it’s easier on you, get his nails trimmed at the vet or at a local HRS chapter. I know it can be more stressful on the owner than on the rabbit!

                  I’ve had luck with the burrito method – but i make it a 2-person deal. The bunny is wrapped with his eyes covered secured on someones lap so I only have to worry about his feet!

                  Also, as K&K mentioned, spay/neuter can have a pretty wide price range. It just depends on the vet care available in your area. It can be pricey as rabbits are still considered “exotics”.

                      Hi and welcome Amanda!  I am so glad you made the decision to have your rabbit fixed.   The cost of a spay or neuter will depend up on the area where you live.  You’ll definately want a rabbit savvy vet, so you might want to contact or check out your local rabbit rescue for recommendations.  Here is the Kentucky Rabbit Rescue web site: http://rabbit.rescueme.org/Kentucky it lists a few low cost spay and neuter clinics (hopefully one is close by). I don’t know if they have experience with rabbits and that is something you definately want to know.  If any of them tell you to fast the rabbit, call somewhere else.  Never fast a rabbit before surgery (a few hours before is O.K. but not a whole day or overnight).

                      Here is a listing of vets (scroll down past the Indiana listings):

                      Here are some tips on finding a rabbit-savvy vet;

                        When speaking to the secretary or whoever answers the phone if they say to fast the bunny ask them to go ask the vet about that.  Sometimes that will happen and the vet will come back and say not to fast the bunny. Sometimes the phone person may be new or just not know or forget. That has happened b4.

                          thanks for the advice! I just hope that the cost in my area is on the low side! i plan on starting the bonding experience after pancakes is nuetered/spayed. I heard they would get along better.

                              As far as nail trimming, obviously if his/her nails is over long, you want to deal with it sooner by taking the bun to the vet or a rabbit rescue. Both of mine have gotten MUCH better about allowing me to pick them up/trance them just over the course of their getting used to me. (I’ve had Lizzy for almost 6 months, and Robbie for 3 months). I can now pick them both up and flip them with only a little foot-flicking afterwards!

                              Although I still haven’t manage nails myself, because it would still be a 2-person job, and my BF is great, but far too afraid of hurting the squirmy buns…They totally take advantage of him!
