Wow, that is expensive! How does it really work though…how does the sensor tell where the quick is.

oh my gosh- that is expensive. Of course they charge $50 for a medium Furrminator on that site (which is on the higher than normal in my experience). I have never seen this before or heard of anyone using it. Though I suspect from the measurements that it would be too large to do a bunnies nails comfortably- it looks to be large dog size. I use small clippers for my bunnies, cat-sized. If you use large dog size you could theoritically amputate their toe if you get their toe caught in and and cut down.

I saw a similar sensor type thing in a petstore once, but I wasn’t willing to pay so much for something when it doesn’t even explain how it works – and then probably have to go get a normal pair anyway. I picked up these amazing “scissor” style clippers for cats, and I love them! The bunnies, not so much, but nobody asked them!

My guess is it would operate like those electronic stud finders. You move those along the wall and a LED light comes on when you have positioned the device over the wall stud. I think they sense a change in density (?????) I would be wary using nail clippers like that though. I’d want to see the quick. I feel for you Vashira!

Katnip, is the pic below (1st) similar to nail clippers you use?  They are scissor like. I recently got some but find they cause the nail to torque a bit.  I may not be snipping quick enough but I was pretty cautious first time using them.

I’m considering using the guillotine style (2nd pic) although it’s for dogs, it’s also advertised for cats and rabbits too.

I’ve used regular human nail clippers and both those pictured above this ^^ I LOVE the guilletine style ones!!

That sensored pair looks awesome….try googling for reviews before you cough up that kind of cash, zootoo also has reviews of product that could help! If they work, worth their weight in gold with dark nails!

You can use a flashlight to look for the quick in dark colored nails too, pain in the butt, but cheaper!

Those scissor style ones are like the ones I just switched to – I find I have more control over where I cut than I did with the type I was using before, I can close it down gently to see exactly where it’s going to cut and then snip real quick. My old ones were spring loaded like the ones in the link to the fancy sensor clippers (only without the sensor) and I felt like I was guessing as to where it was actually going to cut…especially since they were kinda big and harder to maneuver than the little scissor guys and I couldn’t really see.
I’d also read in a couple places that the guillotine style ones can crush bunny nails, so I just stayed away from them – but apparently they work great for K&K!

Company that sells the Miracle coat quick finder (2nd link ^^) says it uses changes in frequencies to determine differances in live area and nail area. Sonic?

Hmm that first nail clipper scares me! It looks intimidating. Like it wants to clip my face off.

I agree with the face cuting off, i hear cops are going to start carrying them as cround controle. i have a block of wood covered in sand papper that that dusty just scratches and wairs his nails down and thay are never sharp or jaged always rounded and natral. and he has a hell of a good time doing it hahaha

I use the type like the first pic- the small cat nail trimmers (like scissors)- I have found those to work well as long as they are sharp.  If they are not sharp- then they seem to bend or pinch the nail instead of a clean cut.  I like them because I can see the nail well and the cutting area is small so I don’t have to worry about what else is in the blade area, longer toe hair, etc.  If you use a larger cutting surface- you might end up getting more hair between the blades and it usually gets pulled on as opposed to clipped off no matter how sharp the blades- they are not meant to cut hair.

I personally do not like the guillione style- I think it is harder to see exactly where you are going to cut  I have a pair of cat nail trimmers that look like the dog type (similiar to those with the sensor) but with no sensor and much smaller- and I love those.  I have also used human nail trimmers on cat and kitten nails and Cotton when she was little- so they work well on small, thin nails.  But as Cotton got older her nails got bigger, rounder and tougher that I was afraid they would not have enough power for a quick snip.

So really trim with what you feel most comfortable with- but it can be trickier to trim with a trimmer that is too oversize for the job.

I’m just going to revive this old thread. Because I have been looking at these nail clippers that can sense nerve and blood vessels, and I have found them in much smaller sizes as well for cats and smaller animals.

So has anyone tried such a clipper?? I have found reviews on Amazon from people who say it doesn’t work, and some saying it works…but they praise it for other things, so I don’t find the reviews useful at all.

The nail clippers I used have a little metal bar that comes down so you can only put the nail in so far. Of course it’s still a good idea to check for the quick but at least it made me feel more secure
