Paul contacted me this morning about an issue with Sprinkles.

He indicated that Sprinkles appeared unstable within her rear legs.  She has been fine all week but up until this morning her rear legs appear a bit wobbly and unstable.  He will be taking her to the vets this evening.

I’ll do some googling on the net, but if anyone has any comments regarding Sprinkles, can they please let me know in the meantime.

        Dawn x

Dawn, I’m sorry to hear this about your other bun bun. ((Sprinkles – get better!!)) Hope there’s a good outcome.

Edit: Just had quick  look at your other post about Sprinkles back nails.  Was this issue resolved?

{{ VIBES }} Dawn there are two things I know of that cause rear leg weakness or symptoms/neuro problems, E. Cuniculi and Pasturella. Both can be tested for at the vets. I’m not at home right now, but I have info on my home comp on what tests are used for diagnosis. I’ll post back later with those!

hmmm. this can be caused by different things, including e. cunniculi, i believe. please let us know what the vet says. is she older, it might also be arthritis. maybe the vet can do an xray to see what the legs look like. do you know if there appears to be any other symptoms?

Thanks for that K&K … I will look up those probable issues … but your information you have at home would be a great help too.

Beka … thankyou for your response.  Sprinkles was fine last night and was eating/drinking ok.

As Sprinkles lives with the ex .. its difficult to know what is actually going on.  I have suggested when he gets home to let her out of her pen and see how she moves around.  But the vet visit is in order …

Sprinkles is about 5 years old.

My rabbit had “floppy rabbit syndrome” they originally thought it was a either hypoglycaemia or a vitamin deficiency but it was neither and it was more likely e.cuniculli. Our treatment was to feed critical care and treat with panacur and metacam i think. We were also told to rub her hind legs to make her more comfortable and increase blood flow. She had extra extra hay put into her hutch to give her a less slipperry surface and pervent ligament damage. An alternative treatment for floppy bunny syndrome is acupuncture. Floppiness can also be caused by a spider bite.

                                Hope sprinkles gets better!!

Hi Danmers … my bun Lily died of floppy bunny syndrome.  It was very quick.  The evening prior to her passing she was absolutely fine … the next morning she was not in good shape and I took her to the vets … however, early that afternoon she passed away.

I’ve just spoken to Paul and he indicated that she was a bit off colour yesterday, but this morning she appeared to have progressed a little worse.

He said that she seemed to be moving in ’drunken’ way … head a bit to one side … he will be taking her to the vets

This does not sound good to me …

Would Sprinkles be in any pain …

I know that E.cuniculi can cause head tilt and rear leg paralysis. I really hope that’s not it! You’ll be in my thoughts!

                                        Encephalitozoon Cuniculi

                                        Signs and Symptoms
: Head tilt, liver failure, kidney failure, loss of function of the legs, eye twitch, blindness by cataracts, and other neuro symptoms.

Where it comes from: Spread from infected rabbits, but can live thirty days or more outside of the body so it may be spread through cross-contact.

Prevention: Limiting exposure to other rabbits who may be infected.

What it is/Diagnosis: Protazoan parasite. A positive blood test indicates only that the rabbit has at some point contacted the disease. It is suggested to do two tests approximately one month apart. A value that rises over the testing period, or both readings being high indicate the rabbit is acutely infected and needs treatment. Values that are low on both readings indicate that the immune system has the disease under control.

Treatment/Prognosis: Treatment by Oxibendazole, Albendazole or Fenbendazole. Improvement may be seen immediately or after several weeks. Blood tests to monitor liver values should be done during treatment as treatment can cause elevation of these levels.

                                        Paturellosis

signs and symptoms: Discharge from the eyes and nose (runny nose) and the rabbit will cough and sneeze. Often presents with the rabbit wiping the eyes and nose frequently and wet paws from wiping. Severe cases can present with subcutaneous absesses and wry-neck or head-tilt (caused by inner ear infections). Discharge may be seen from the vagina or blood may be seen in the urine.

Where it comes from/risk factors: Exposure to infected rabbits, or carrier rabbits. Rabbits who recover from this usually remain carriers. Rabbits may not show symptoms until under stress when the immune system is depressed.

Prevention: Keeping all areas sanitized and not exposing the rabbit to others who could be carriers. The disease is a contact disease and is only spread through mating, fighting, wounds and contact (Not airborne-contact with nasal secretions).

What it is: (Snuffles) Bacterial infection (Pasteurella multocida) causing inflammation of the mucous membranes of the air passageways and lungs. In severe cases can cause abscesses, wry-neck and/or infection of the uterus, testes and/or mammary glands.

Treatment/Prognosis: Culture is often used to diagnose. Usually treated with Sulfa drugs like sulfaquinoxaline. Antibiotics for the disease are given-systematic and general. Abscesses are surgically removed, blocked tear ducts or conjunctivitis are treated by flushing of the ducts. Fluids and supportive nutrition should be given as needed.

                                              Morning All

Sprinkles … had her visit to the vets last night and was given meds (not sure which ones).  It appears that she may have contracted some sort of virus according to the vet.

Paul messaged me this morning to let me know that Sprinkles is much better and getting back to her normal self again (thumping, grunting and ringing her bell for her food).  She has eaten and seems to be getting along well.

I am so relieved … To those who don’t know … Sprinkles was my first bunny who I adopted … however, she ended up with my then boyfriend who still has her … Its along story … I would of taken her back but I thought it in her best interests to stay with Paul … he has been doing a great job with looking after her … she’s an inside bun.  She’s a darling girl, non-aggressive and loved following me around … so different from my current bun Luey.

Bunnytowne – Hey Girl – Luey is doing fine .. and the piggies are still eating, pooping, squeaking  and demanding their food .. All is great … the move went well too … been in the house for a week now and I am so happy … the place is lovely, my garden is wonderful and I just love hearing the birds in the morning .. not to mention my lovely view overlooking the valley … I could not be happier.  I trust you are well too … I must email you now that I am in some sort of order … and organised again … xx

Thanks All …. for your support and care for Sprinkles … luv ya All.  x

Paul always lets me know if something is amiss with Sprinkles … he knows I love her to bits and I’d have a piece of him if he didn’t.

We are still really good mates … and we catch up now and again for coffee.  No hard feelings between us both
