Jersey had her vaccination for Calici virus yesterday (RHD(?)) and today she seems to have lost her appetite. Is this common after a shot? The vet didn’t say anything. She just asked if she had had any reactions previously, right before she gave the shot.
She’s eaten a tiny amount of rolled oats and ate some pepitas from my hand but hasn’t touched her morning pellets. (It is now 2 pm here). There’s some fresh willow lying around she hasn’t touched either. She’s hiding away a bit but not hunched up, just wants to be left alone. Maybe a bit lethargic?
After Charlie got his vaccine, he didn’t eat or anything – he had the shot the year before fine, without any loss of appetite but for some reason this year he was affected by it. I took him back to the vet & they gave him a painkiller shot then he was fine.
I think it must hurt like maybe a tetanus shot hurts us, which makes them reluctant to eat.
So my vet basically said you can leave it and wait until he feels better tomorrow or I can give him a shot now so he feels better straight away…
Thanks Cassi. I didn’t see my regular vet but this other one was also “rabbit” vet. She said they sometimes get a bump or redness and the puncture site. I haven’t seen anything. Jers was also fine with her first shot, she was about 4 months old then. She seemed pretty good yesterday, took awhile to finish of her greens which is her last meal. Later last night, she was bit odd but settled eventually. Now today she’s moving about, just not interested in regular food.
Wonder if they are using different type of vaccine? Surely they’d say. Hers was called Caylap or something like that.
I don’t know, as I said he was fine last year & this year he had a reaction to it. I’d assume that since they ask if they had a reaction last year, it wouldn’t have changed…but who knows?
Just discovered Calici also called RHD, VHD and RCD!
She’s content to let me pet her and even gives tooth purr, so I doubt she’s in pain. She allowed that this morning too. She’s just starting eating aa little amount of some greens. May need to encourage her more. Now just wait for the poop and all will be well…
Ok, now she’s pooped. Bit smallish and not as much as I’d like. It’s all slow going! Sorry people, I know this reads like a Eat/Poop blog – !
if she’s still not eating normally tomorrow, i’d call your vet. i’m sorry, i don’t have any experience with vaccines or the effects of them on buns b/c they are not given in the US… let us know how she does today!
When cats/dogs get vaccinations here they are a little off their feed and lethargic for a while too. If you think your bun is in pain like from a tetanus shot could you get bun to let you put a cold pack on it for a little bit. It might help. Of course contact the vet as soon as you can. Just to be sure and maybe if enuf buns react this way they may change the vac for the next time and it wont’ be so bad. I wonder if this year the vacs are stronger. I really don’t know how that works but was just a thought.
Thanks. She’s seems better today, getting more greens in to up the fluids. Some poop was peppercorn size so I was fearful her gut was slowing down, but it’s all on the improve. Plus it is Monday here, so I have better access to the vet. Next time I’ll have the foresight to have her shots done at beginning of week incase I need to go back in. I have now read of some reactions to the vaccine but I would still urge people to get it down. Getting the virus is much worse!
that’s frustrating when things that are helpful cause their own problems…
well, i’m glad she’s doing better!
Yes no kidding that virus is freaking scary!! I was wondering if calci was vhd! Terrible terrible disease. Glad Jersey’s on the mend!!
How’s Jersey today? I imagine the vaccine affects her much like vaccines affect humans when we get them. Still it’s worrisome.
Glad to hear she is feeling better. Smaller poops can be understandable cause she didn’t feel too good. They should be back to normal soon. Vacc’s are rough sometimes. Poor babies.
Thanks everyone, the girl seems to be back to normal. She even got a little run around outside yesterday arvo. But then I had to round her up& usual antics ensued. She kept flicking her ears really fast, something was worrying her. I though a bug may have gotten in there. She let me look but it continued to bother her. Eventually, few hours later, all good again! *sigh!* I even got one of my sisters to look in her ear with her odoscope today! Whatever it was, it seems to have gone, now I just have a healthy but disapproving bunny – of course!
Aww, new picture!!! She’s SOOOO cute! Can ou post a big one somewhere of her so I can add her to my (ever growing) collection?
Okay! I’ll try find a thread it’s already in and post the link. I thought I should take out the baby pic and put a more ‘recent’ one (was take 6 months ago I think!) I’m working on getting some new ones though.
Edit: Here the thread I was thinking of. Jers is in there! Plus lots of other Fluffies!
How did I miss that post?! Thanks, I’m loving the bunny cuteness!
