I have red plum tree and black walnut trees.

Would the wood make good chew toys for my new baby bunny?

How do I prepare the wood for him?

I thought I would boil it to kill any little gems on it. And use the dehydrator to dry the wood out.

        Can rabbits eat black walnuts?

We never use pesticides on our trees.

        Thank you,

        Maggie

this is from the HRS toy FAQ…  http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/toys.html

Untreated wood, twigs and logs that have been aged for at least 3 months [are safe]. Apple tree branches can be eaten fresh off the tree.  Stay away from: cherry, peach, apricot, plum and redwood, which are all poisonous.

that being said, i thought that some “pitted fruit” wood was okay as long as it was throughly dried… someone else should be along soon with more on this topic.

i personally just buy willow toys for my buns b/c i don’t have access to safe trees, and even if i did, the whole process and time involved is not worth the money i’d save…

i don’t think any nuts are safe for bunnies.  you also want to stay away from seeds.  (hmmm… are walnuts nuts or seeds?)

a better treat would be some herbs, raisins or carrots in very small amounts.

            Thanks,Beka27

We get our bunny the 1st of Dec.

I’ve done lots of reading and couldn’t find anything on plum trees or walnuts.

I’m glad I posted the question.

Hi Maggie! Beka is absolutely 100% correct, no walnut – the wood is toxic because of the tannins contained in the wood. Wood from trees that bear a fruit with a pit must be thoroughly dried out.

                Welcome Maggie!

Too bad you don’t have apple trees-that wood is OK for them and they really like it!
