My Snickers, 5 years old, will not eat.

Here are the details:  Usually eats timothy hay and pellets, both by oxbow.  Plus 2 dried cranberries a day, and greens most every day.

Last weekend I bought oat hay, and have been mixing it in with the timothy.  The last two days, i was lazy and didn’t get downstairs to get more timothy, and they only got oat.  Plus we started a new bag of the usual pellets, oxbow bunnies basics t a few days ago.

She ate and acted fine yesterday.  Last night, I was half asleep when I gave them their pellets and hay, and didnt’ notice anything wrong with Snicky, but I can’t say for sure.

This morning, Snickers would not come to the door for her nose pats.  Instead, she sat in the corner, eyes narrowed and breathing quickly and shallowly.  She would not take food, even a dried cranberry.

My fiance took her to the vet, and he examined her fully and determined her to be not urgent..?  He said it might have been the oat hay, and to give only timothy hay and greens for a few days.  We are to feed her ciritical care.  But i don’t know how much.  We just syringed her a teaspoonful now.  When we picked her up to give her the CC, she had poops under her.  A few.  Normal-looking size and shape, consistency, etc.  But now she feels not quite as warm as usual, and she is shaking a bit now and then.  She is drinking water, seemingly a little more than usual.  She will not take greens or hay, so far.

Please help.  Any thoughts or ideas?

Edit:  I forgot to mention, the vet gave her a dose of Metacam, and send us home with some, too (liquid).  He told us to buy the simethicone drops.  I only stopped home for lunch, but my fiance is off work today, and he is out getting the drops right now.

Did the vet tell you what he/she thought could be wrong? Did the vet give you any medication?

How long have you been hand feeding her?

How much does she weigh? A teaspoon is not enough. I would start with 1 oz three times a day until she starts eating.

Also did the vet look at her teeth to see if she had dental problems like molar spurs?

I wish the vet had examined her more, when a rabbit shows illness it’s urgent-period.

If she’s haunched up, you can give her some OVOL (baby gas meds), 1-2 ml (it won’t hurt her if you give it and she doesn’t have gas).

In the meantime I’d phone around to try to find a more rabbit savvy vet. Did the vet take her temp, or do you know how to do so? (Just use a plastic thermometer, anally, use some vaseline though!). If you can’t, and she feels cool, give her a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and or keep her in your lap for warmth. Hypothermia is very dangerous.

Sounds like she’s going through a bout of statis to me-Sarita what do you think?

Yes, he did a thorough mouth exam, according to my fiance.  I was not able to be there.  :/  I also palpated all around her mouth and jaw myself, and she did not flinch.

Did the vet palpate the stomach, do you know? Did he feel a full stomach?

I would start feeding him the critical care though at least one ounce 3 times a day or more if he will eat more.

He thought she had a bellyache from the new hay/change of diet.  I forgot to mention, sorry, that they gave her a dose of metacam and sent us home with more.  I’m sorry I don’t have the dose in front of me.  I am at work.

This morning is when I first noticed the problem.  When I stopped home for lunch, fiance and I gave her the 1 tsp critical care.

She weighs around 6 pounds.  I know they said she didn’t lose weight since her last visit, but the exact weight I don’t know.  She may be 6.5 pounds, but not much more than that.

I will tell my fiance to give her more critical care when he gets home from the store.

                    thank you

He did feel the stomach.  All I know is he said it felt “normal.”  I did hear her belly gurgle after the critical care was given to her.

I will definitely give more critical care, thank you so much.

Please keep us updated. Hopefully the metacam will help with the upset stomach.

I would say if you don’t see any improvement over the weekend get her back to the vet on Monday – of course if she starts declining then you will want to get her to a vet sooner. It may be something more than the upset stomach if she does not start eating by Monday and further tests like bloodwork may be in order.

                          Thanks for the vibes!

Fiance is getting the gas meds as I write.  Thank you for giving the dosage.

He did not take her temp.  I will when I get home.  Please tell me what is the normal range?  I will also tell my fiance to put a hot water bottle in the cage with her, thank you.

I was afraid it was statis.  ((  THis is my first time dealing with it, and that scares me!

I’m going to look into a better rabbit vet, shortly.

Yes, I was actually hoping they’d do more testing today.  :/  If she is not better in a day or two, I am going to take to back to the vet, or another vet.

Thank you for all of your advise, and i will definitely keep the board updated.

Normal range is between 101-103F (Unfortunately a drop of 1-2 degrees can indicate hypothermia and some buns just ‘run’ a little cooler or warmer then others, so it’s best to know the normal range ahead of time-however if your out of the range you at least know somethings wrong)

Thank you, again.  I can’t wait to get home to her.

Hi snickybun – I got your email. Sending healing vibes! You have received such excellent advice Also, note that if you are not used to taking rectal temperatures it can be normal for people to not to push it in  far enough and then the temp comes out colder than normal. Of course you don’t want to go too far either.(no more than an inch).   Depending on what temp gage you have,

Here is a great article about how to take your bunny’s rectal temperature. #2 in the article

                                  http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sickbun.html

My vet recommend the “flexible” thermometer. I  have “ComfortFlex” and my vet showed me how deep with THAT thermometer – Insert a little bit passed the metal part.   So no metal should be showing.

She also said for future ref – if you’re just not sure if you’re getting it right or don’t feel comfortable pushing deeper, then just do it how you feel comfortable, but get a regular readings of the temperature of your bunny when s/he’s healthy, and though it may be lower temp due to not getting it pushed in, at least you’ll know if there is something wrong if the temp is higher and lower than what you normally get.   I know that doesn’t help for this incident, but it’s something that can help anyone reading this for future ref.
