        Hiya everyone!

I’m new here, my first post was in the Behavior forum regarding my Buns’ stubborn littertraining issues.  I’m very glad I found this site; there is so much useful information here, and everyone’s so helpful and nice!

I was curious of the following:  Are toilet paper/paper towel rolls, paper, cardboard edible?  I know they’re often listed as safe toys, but I’m not sure if that means they are edible.  My Buns love to tear them up, dig, and toss them, but a good portion is also eaten.  Is that safe?

        Thanks for your help!

A little background: I have a beautiful 5 month young 9.6 lb broken orange French Lop boy named Buns.  I previously had the pleasure of living with my former roommate’s bun Bunny, and over a year ago, my first bun, a wonderful Holland Lop named Mr Lop passed away.  I’ve been living with buns for over 6 years now.

I think that the toilet paper rolls are safe if the bunny eats a tiny bit. But if your bun is actually eating the whole thing, I’d probably take it away.

          A 9 pound bunny?! Sounds huge…..and beautiful…..pictures please???

          Welcome!

some of it can be eaten. you want to be careful that the bun is not ingesting too much as that can affect their food intake. with the paper towel/toilet paper rolls, make sure there is no glue residue on the outside that is left over from the paper. some people will stuff the rolls with strands of hay to encourage them to eat more. mine love sections of newspaper, they will dig and shred them all day long.

Thanks allenj1 & Beka27!  I’ve been wondering about his for quite some time, but never asked.

He eats a quarter of each roll.  I do remove the glue residue from the exterior – is there more glue inside?

I’m working on pictures, please bear with me

The majority are him sleeping contentedly in his litter pan.  I’m trying to take more of him outside his cage, but as he’s not yet litter trained, he doesn’t spend that much time out.  When he is out, he’s zooming around, and my camera skills are neither that quick nor skilled that I can capture him in his glory.  When he does sit still out of his cage, it’s usually to pee!

I stopped giving TigerLily toilet aper rolls because she would habitually throw them in her water bowl, get them soggy and then eat them!!!!!!

It was disgusting and turned ehr water brown so No MORE! I hate it because she really got a kick out of them but I was scared she would poison herself or get it stuck in her tummy.

My family is getting a 10-12 pound Californian bunny and I was wondering if toilet paper specifically was ok for them to eat because I saw a recipe suggesting you can use toilet paper to make treats

Awwww! I love Californians!! Finn is my Cali bunny. Regarding your question, I personally would not give my rabbit anything with toilet paper itself because one can see how it clumps when it is wet. I also would not give toilet paper rolls in treats because it doesn’t sound very safe but I also do not know if it is safe to digest… I wouldn’t think that it is… But I use the cardboard parts to make toss toys for him that I fill with treats to exercise his brain.

This thread is 9 years old, so I’m going to lock it. Kayla – I would not use toilet paper, but toilet paper rolls (cardboard) are fine. If you have more questions regarding this, please start a new thread. This prevents confusion.
