I had the scare of my life this morning….I went to feed Stella and Luna their morning pellets.  I left the room to refill their water crock. When I returned, there was spittle all over the cage and poor Luna had drool coming out of her mouth and she was gasping for air! I guessed she was choking since she was fine a few minutes before.  She just sat in the corner of the cage and I could see she was trying to catch her breath.  I ran to the phone to call my vet and when I went back to check on her, she was sitting in their box eating hay with Stella so she’s fine now.

I never felt so helpless.  Has anyone else had this happen?  My rabbits devour their food like it’s their last meal and I guess she swallowed her Oxbow pellets a little too fast!  I’m so glad she’s fine now.  I know rabbits can’t vomit, so I was very concerned.  I cleaned up the cage and I could see some pellets mixed in with the spittle. (I know…gross)

Someone else had a similar post  their bun was salivating very badly.  Then it stopped.  There is something you can do when they choke like that.

I remember a reply saying to swing them to help the object dislodge.  Yikes. Thats scary..   I wonder if you can find the post on search but I forget what the name of it was.   It seems to be only the 2nd time I have ever heard of that happening.

That previous post was not too long ago either.

that post happened very recently. i am not quite sure they figured out what exactly was going on, i think they thought that the bun had been eating too quickly and had taken in too much food at one time. is Luna is pellet “scarfer”?

I found that post…thanks so much bunnytowne! I printed out the email from Dana and will keep it handy. From what I read, it looks like Luna was gagging. And yes, Beka27, Stella and Luna are pellet scarfers! I currently have 5 (including 1 foster) and they are the greediest of the bunch! I will make an appt this week, so the vet can take a look and make sure she’s okay. Thanks again for your help!

Luna is the lop on the left!!!

Yep – that was me! Or rather, my Noelle. Here’s the link to that thread if anyone else was wondering.

We never found a specific cause, I just assume she inhaled her pellets a bit too fast as Dana had suggested. Now I put them in the treat dispenser ball and the buns roll it around to get them out, which works well to slow them down. If I’m too lazy to fill up the ball, then I just scatter them up and down the hallway when they aren’t looking and then they have a nice surprise when they happen upon them but don’t go all insane trying to scarf them down.

Scattering the pellets is a good idea. Maybe I’ll try that. I put their pellets in a bowl and when they hear the bag, they come running. Poor Luna, I think she was more scared than me. Anyway, she’s fine now. I keep checking on her and right now she’s chilling out.

Glad Luna and Noelle recovered quickly! Thanks to you both for posting about it. It sounded so unusual but for you both to experience this during a short space of time, perhaps it is common for fast eaters (???) Helps build our knowledge.

That treat dispenser ball is a really good idea! I think I’ll have to get one for my Amelia – she scarfs pellets like CRAZY! Sometimes my hand won’t be out of the dish before she sticks her head in there and I have to try really hard to get my tablespoon (and hand) back!
