So I’m starting to question the binky as sign of happiness. Maybe there’s subtle variations we should be aware of. Most times it certainly looks joyful but, from where I’m standing, when herding Jersey inside with oh-so-gentle hand clapping, it looks more like a F— You! Either that, or she’s enjoying playing the chasy game.
I agree, there are times when it seems like they binky out of nervousness or maybe frustration. Once after I was practicing picking up Yoshi, he ran to the other side of the room, binkied a couple times, then came back and started digging into my sweatshirt.
The other nite telling Cotton to go to bed he went stopped at his house door. Then he tossed his head and hopped off. After I got behind him and said lets go to bed he went inside that time.
I thought he was playing with me.
Some rabbits are very mischievious and enjoy making you mad, they’ll chew something you don’t want them to, then when you jump up to clap and tell them no, the run off binkying…Maybe your bun has a sense of humour like that?
I have this problem Jerseygirl, Layla binkies at the wierdest times. She’ll binky when I tell her no, she’ll binky when I sit on the floor, she just binkies at wierd things that don’t seem to generate happiness. I’ve even discovered she’ll binky when I make a siren looplooploop noise, which should generate fear you’d think? (Discovered by accident btw)
Maybe it means different things to different buns? Charlie def binkies only when he’s happy.
I remember reading somewhere that rabbits in the wild will binky as a way to escape predators (jump up in the air to surprise them, then take off in an unexpected direction), so it seems to make sense that they would do this for reasons other than happiness.
C&C – why were you making a siren sound to begin with? Hahaha. Just walking about the house wooping? I got a really strange mental image!
I still think it’s just they get an itch or a draft on their bum and they take off.
I agree with beeca. It probably has its origins in the wild, avoiding predators, scaring them off, shaking loose their grip, feinting a different direction then running. It looks to me like when they play it’s also a form of practicing their bunny skills. Like a kid’s game of run, hide and seek when they know they’re not in danger, but it started out as a survival trick.
Or they’re just plain goofy.
^^^i agree…
silly bunnies.
it might def have small differences that we cannot perceive the meaning of…
C&C… that’s so funny! Max is very strange. i vacuum and Meadow will take off and hide. Max who is the most scaredy bun ever, will calmly sit right next to the vacuum as it’s running. he will startle at most anything else, but for some reason that does not bother him. the other day i was vacuuming and he hops up to the cord (about 1 foot from the wall) takes it in his mouth, yanks the cord out (killing the power of coruse!), and then hops away. maybe i was done vacuuming and i didn’t realize?
I’m going to go ahead and agree with the escaping binky theory!!
We have Nala at our shelter who was stray and when it’s time to round her up, (and I”m very practiced catching bunnies!!) she’ll escape with a binky over my head as I’m just about scooping her up!! I should really videotape it-I’m sure its hilarious to watch me get foiled time and time again!
i think so too. binkies are for practising their skillz… lol.
k&k you should def try to get that recorded![]()
Beka your bun unplugged your vac? what a trickster.
Aren’t they a riot. I still think Cotton does it sometimes to play with me. Little Cutie.. Ruby likes to leap straight up in the air every now n then. Mostly in the evenings they do this stuff. Cotton will run in a spin circle on a cushion on the couch sometimes. It is funny.. Or on his living room rug. I think with hubby staying up all weird hours they dont’ get enuf sleep so they don’t do their fun stuff much. He is gone right now til tonite.
I thought they would be more playful since they got all their sleep. Haven’t seen it yet.
i know right? i turned around just as he hopped up, yanked it out then hopped away… it’s a new vacuum so the plug is a little bit loose anyways… i’ve had to bend it a bit to get it to stay in our outlets…
Think I’m liking this theory. After all, I do have a bun who truly stalks my sister and can open doors with her teeth.![]()
A stalking bun, thats really scary! I mean bunnies can be scary to begin with but adding stalking to the list!
Charlie opens doors with his teeth, all our doors have little tooth marks at the bottom from his tiny little jaw. He knows he’s not allowed to do it and so only does it when I’m not around or the evil spray bottle is not around.
How does a bunny stalk? I have the funniest picture in my head of a bunny doing that wierd ‘army crawl’ they do sometimes, slowly creeping up…and yes, David Attenborough has kindly provided the commentary.
Pepper used to unplug a lamp because apparently the (covered) cord offended her sense of BunShui. I found it unplugged a couple of times and figured I’d knocked it – till one day I was working on the computer and heard scrabble scrabble from under the couch. Not only had she unplugged it again, but she was dragging the cord out fron under the couch.
What can I do? I moved the lamp!
BUNSHUI! What a riot! I’m going to use that next time Layla starts to pull things out from under the bed – she’s just creating better BunShui.
Fern binkies when I train her for too long, she just kind of binkies while doing the trick, it is kind of cute, I think it is probably a sight of frustration.
