        Hi Gang,

I’m new to posting here on the forums although I’ve been reading them for several months, ever since I got my first rabbit, Morwen. While there has been no change in her activity, I have noticed that she develops crusty fur on her face from time to time. I’m wondering what might be causing this. The crusties are gnerally either on her cheek or, most recently, under her jaw (towards her cheek rather than her chin). The first crusty was easily dealt with by grooming her but Morwen is none-to-pleased with my attempts to get under her chin to groom out the latest bit.

Does anyone have any suggestions or rationale for why my bunny’ fur is like this?

Hmm, I’ve personally never encountered anything like that. Would it be possible for you to get a picture to post so the forum leaders can take a look? Maybe even a detailed description including colour, size, consistency (does it crumble when you hold it or is a solid mass), etc would help.

Have you checked eyes and nose for any type of discharge? Given the location on the cheek, maybe if she is having a tear duct problem or something she has tears running down that leave crusties when they dry – kinda like waking up with sleep in the corner of your eye? That’s a big speculative guess, I don’t know if that’s even possible, just a theory.

Hopefully the leaders will add some input soon!

Welcome and glad you decided to post!

I agree I think a picture would help out a bunch! It’s hard to say, maybe she’s drooling (tooth probs) or having trouble swallowing and thus getting stuff on her fur…Or maybe her eye is leaking/watering from an infection or irritation?

Although I’d love to see a pic and figure something simple out, If its something thats just started and isn’t normal you’d probably do best to make an appointment with your vet to get her checked out just in case. Do you have a regular vet yet? Also for some it’s a long weekend this weekend so you may want to get her in asap so you don’t have to do the emergency vet thing when the reg vet is closed.

If it is not something that she is getting into (another pets food, etc) then it sounds like she needs a trip to the vet.  Rabbits usually have impeccable grooming habits- and unexplained crustiness of their fur is a reason to have it checked out by a vet.

There might be a reason…what do you feed her?  Does she get into anything?  Is she able to groom it herself?  After you cleaned it off for her, how soon did it develop again?  Does her face look even?  (comparing left to right side for swelling)  Any changes in her eating habits- eating less hay or chewing less?  If you could post a pic that would be great.  Bunnies are a learning process for everyone!

Hi and welcome Saroja! Let me share a tidbit with you and see if it may be something similiar. Daffodil, my diva-bun who has white fur gets yellowed, matted/knotted/crusty fur right under her chin. It drove me crazy trying to figure out what it was and the vet had no clue either. Finally, I noticed that when she drank water out of her water dish, it would soak that area and try as she might to groom and groom that spot, it didn’t come clean and would eventually get crusty and tangled. Since that discovery I moved her water crock up to a higher level (it attaches to the side of the cage) and I also trim that portion of fur a little shorter than the rest once a month. I am not saying this is the problem with your rabbit, but wonder if it might help you investigate a little to see if that might be it. If not, I wonder if it could be the scent glands under the chin that might be causing this and if so or if you cannot uncover the cause, a trip to the vet would be recommended.
