I’ve always just given Atti the leaves and I throw out the stems because I’m not sure if they can cause any problems like I’ve read celery can.

So is it okay to give him entire pieces of parsley so I don’t have to keep ripping off the leaves and wasting the stems or should I continue doing it?

I give the stems as well. I rip them in half but thats it. I never thought about them causing problems. Boy i hope they dont!

rinse and give as is – no need to separate the leaves. They are all good.

Pretty much when it comes to veggies the buns will want pretty much everything. Don’t think in terms of what us humans eat. I think of parsley my buns love the stems better than anything-they eat it like pasta. lol I used to throw away even the very end of the romaine lettuce and they like that too!

Probably the only thing I wouldn’t give them- I buy brussel sprouts at Meijer on the actual stalk- they lask much longer if left on the stalk in the fridge. I pick them off when ready to feed. I havent seen anything about the stalk w/ buns so we pitch that part.

My buns favorite veggies include flat leaf parsley, regular curley parsley, dandelion greens, romaine lettuce, frisee, cilantro, brussle sprouts, carrot tops (green stuff), endive…and im sure im leaving stuff out.

Nikiway- do you have a Meijer near you? They can be expensive as far as groceries BUT their greens are cheap and very fresh. My buns will take their greens over any other store. I used to buy greens from kroger but now the buns just turn up their noses at them.

Most parsley stems should be fine, especially if you’re buying it in bunches at the store. However, we have a pot of parsley we grow for our bunnies, and sometimes the stems can get really long, thick and stringy – I just make sure to rip them into smaller pieces.

I’ve actually never heard of Meijer, but there’s a Shaffer’s Market (I think it’s just locally owned) and I can get 2 weeks of parsley for 49 cents so it’s not bad, especially since Giant Eagle (large grocery chain) charges $1.50 for the same amount. I also got two weeks of Romaine for $2.30.
I’m glad I can give him the entire parts!
Next time I’ll just separate it instead of worrying about cutting, although I may still cut them but toss the stems in the salad too instead of in the trash.
Thanks for all the great help!!

I have noticed a difference in greens between the supermarkets.  I usually buy all my greens from Meijer- they seem to have the freshest greens and the most variety.  They obviously must get in frequent shipments- because if I happen to have to go twice in a week- it clearly is not the same stuff that was there 3 days ago.  My area has a lot of nationalities in the area- and Meijer seems to cater to that also- even in produce.

I have never tried brussel sprouts for the bunnies.  Cranberries just started to appear in the markets- and I tried those- Cotton would not try them, but Penny ate them.

I love that I am able to find rapini, arugula (though it usually looks yucky), dandelion greens, bok choy, etc… typically in the supermarket.

I never know what I am going to buy- I base it on what looks freshest and what is on “the list” that I printed and keep in my purse.  I rinse the veggies/greens in my salad spinner, lay them on paper towels to dry some and then store them in the Debbie Meyer Green Bags (see previous threads) and they last at least a week….well they would if they were not about gone by Day 7.

Nikiway-do you have Kroger? What direction in ohio do you live? I live in the southwest and I am thinking that Meijer is here, IN, MI and probably IL. It is kinda like Walmart. I don’t think they have the best prices on normal groceries but great produce.

Nikiway-what you are paying for greens is amazing! I pay $1.49 for a bunch of dandilion greens, I get 3 Parsleys for $2…so I am paying a little more but cheaper than anywhere else around.

Katnip- I have noticed that Meijer really does cater to everyone. I see alot of different people in there buying strange things because they cant get it anywhere. Someone had the nerve once to tell me to ask Meijer if I could get any leftover greens for my buns that doesnt sell. I gave them a dirty look and told them my buns eat fresh only. lol Believe me, my buns know whats fresh and whats not. But the very fact that they refuse greens from Kroger (our local largest food chain) now that tells you something! lol

I love the variety at Meijer as well. I envy those who live in CA who have those great outside markets that we don’t have here. But at least we have a huge selection of greens. I have noticed the Brussel Sprouts on the stalk are always with most of our greens. We have the huge long produce area that goes- parsley, mint, endive, arugala, romaine, red leaf, dandilion greens..and then the area with individual peas, radiccio and then right after that there is a bucket with some herbs and that is where I find the brussel sprouts- if that makes any sense at all. lol

Sprouts on the stalk will last a few weeks without problems. I store my greens in the market bags I put them in there and everything stays pretty fresh alll week. I just notice that dandilions never seem to last too long.

I thought brussels sprouts were related to cabbage, and could tend to give buns gas/upset stomach? I’ve been avoiding them for that reason… How much/often do you guys give them brussel sprouts? As a regular part of the daily salad, or do you use it more as a treat?

i think Checkers has a pretty strong stomach based on what her previous caretakers fed her (!) and her never having a problem, but Checkers loves brussels sprouts. i put them in the freezer (no stalks) and give 2-3 daily with salad usually, unless i’m having a lazy day. They’re one of the first things she pulls out and eats, and she’s even taken it like a treat before. i would think it could give gas, but like i said, i think Checkers has a strong tummy…

i also give her romaine, spinach (not daily), kale (not daily), mustard and collard greens, parsley, cilantro, sometimes rosemary, frozen broccoli (not daily), snap peas (not daily), brussels sprouts, and occasionally bell pepper. i introduce new foods slowly but she has quite a few she can eat when needed.

LightChick- If you check the veggie list with HRS brussel sprouts has none of the exceptions like cabbage.

                              http://www.rabbit.org/care/veggies.html

If I buy the stalk of sprouts there is about 3 dozen on the stalk so it lasts about 2 weeks. I feed them almost daily when I buy the stalk which is monthly. They all LOVE them. All 4 of them eat these first out of everything in their veggie bowls. They eat all them everytime.
