  Lop ears are so frustrating. Bindi had an infection about 6 months ago. It cleared up with meds. Then a few months later I suspected infection again and brought him to the vet. She said they weren’t infected but he has an excessive amount of wax in his ears. She gave me an ear wash to use as needed.
  
  For the last while, I have to clean his ears every night and use the wash about 4 times a week. His ears are almost completely clogged every night, I don’t know if he can even hear or not. Sometimes it looks like wax, sometimes it’s sort of a white colour deep in the canal. It’s so hard to get them clean cuz they are so tiny inside. Some of the stuff I dig out looks a bit like pus (sorry this is pretty gross) so I called the vet today to explain the situation and see if she thinks I should bring him in. She has the day off but I’m gonna call her tommorrow a.m. and discuss it with her.

  i am a new lop owner, so no. at Max’s first visit, she said his ears looked great. what were your signs of infection? scratching?

  Yes what are the signs? I’ve checked Chucks ears (and my rescue loppies) several times and all appears clear?? They don’t seem to itch them…On the other hand Rupert has been shaking his ears alot everytime I give him an ear rub…think he may not like it-or time to go to the vets?

  When Bindi had an infection, he wasn’t scratching or digging at his ears. I just noticed some goopy looking white stuff in his ears and the vet took a look at it under the microscope and said there was some bacteria there.
  
  He’s still not scratching his ears but they seem sore when I clean them but the poor guy has to get his ears cleaned every night so they might just be a bit sore from all the cleaning.

  LPT, could he be reacting to a food allergy? Is there any kind of foul smell? Does he just constantly flap his ears?
  
  My son’s dog had really nasty ears. We found out he had a yeast infection and it was coming from what he was eating. After a shot of steroids, WEEKS of antibiotics and washing the ears with solution and adding ointment to boot twice a day, we got it cleared up, we kept the foodstuffs out of his diet that could cause the problem and Voila! No more nasty ears!
  
  It wasn’t something he always had either. He just suddenly developed the allergies and just can’t have certain foods anymore.

  I doubt it’s a food allergy because he’s been eating the same thing for over a year now. There is a little bit of a smell but it’s hard to tell if that’s infection or just the smell of the abundance of wax. I’m calling the vet this morning to see if she thinks I should bring him in or not.
