OK so way back in the day I was the proverbial ‘horse girl’ at school, all I could talk about was horses and my life revolved around them. I was totally a dorky kid
Anyways we moved and I had to concentrate on catching up on a different curriculum to get into university and was busy being cool and stopped riding. As you all know I’m sort of back in the horse loop with my shelter work and riding….
So I was at my parents house last night and I grabbed my ‘black stallion’ book collection (21 books) and I’m being a dork and plowing through them! Quite enjoying the read…in fact I did force Dave to watch the Black Stallion with me the other night and I’m even forcing him to ride with me at the rescue soon!!
Anyone else a ‘black stallion’ fan??
*looks around at the empty room*
just me?![]()
Sorry, never heard of black stallion…is it like black beauty (my fav book when I was little along with call of the wild)
Oh those are great too!! Just watched Black Beauty on youtube last week (did you know you can watch full movies on there in parts!?? It’s great!)
Black Stallion movie is awesome. The boy riding bare back on the beach……..! Didn’t realise there was a book series thou. Love the thread title he he he!
I read all the Black Stallion books by Walter Farley when I was a kid. Recently I watched the movies that are out and related to the stories- although the movies are not new- I just “discovered” I could get them thru my Blockbuster service.
I was obsessed with horse books when I was a kid. At school we had a catalog that came out monthly that we could order off at at reduced prices- and I bought every horse book. LOL.
I am still a book junkie- although not so much with horses anymore- although I still love a good horse read.
Katnip-Did you read ‘The Saddle Club’ and “Blue Ribbon Winner’s series?
the Black Stallion series was almost all I would read over n over too. The one with the white stallion named Thunderhead. I still have dreams about those books.
When our book reports were due once I did one on a black stallion book I had read earlier and did a report on it already. I was sad when the teacher told me I had to have a new book I couldn’t do another report on a book I already reported on.
And the white fang series. Yeah. I had Black Beauty book too.
When my Mom went to hairdressing school she would bring me and ohh I hated going. Til I got into the magazines and cut out every horse picture in those magazines. I made a scrapbook of them. After a while people started complaining the pages had holes in them heheee. I cut the pics out of the newspapers when it would have an article or a horse race in it.
Me and Janet were horse nuts alright. My dad played a bad trick on me. HE said if I lived with him he would buy me a horse. Well at 16 he came got me and teased me yeah I will buy you a horse a rocking horse. He was picking and would make me mad. He picked on my bro’s fiancee so bad she would cry. So I ran away I couldn’t take all the cigarette smoke and the drinking. The living room had a blue cloud in it. Just couldn’t take it. Dad thought it was funny. Plus he let a known molester stay with him. So yep I left.
I also collected all those little plastic toy horses. I had 63 and each one had a name too. I had a list of all their names. And when I would find one that a tail had been broken off I would cut my barbie dolls hair run tape around it and glue the hair on the horse so it would have a tail. Hehee. It looked pretty good too.
OH I even had a small plastic toy horse named The Black Stallion. Then the Briar horses came out. Yeah !!!!
I was well I forget but was in 1992 that I got my horse. A quarter horse. A gorgeous young chestnut. His name was Johnny. I would talk about how great he looked beautiful muscles and chestnut. My co workers thougth I was fooling around on my husband ahahaa.
Someone showed me a picture of a gorgeous white muscular horse with Arnold schwarsenegger sittin on it. I paid the man no mind and oooohd and aaaahhd over the beautiful horse. My friend laughed and said yep a true horse lover. Forget the man give me the horse.
I’ve read The Black Stallion, Saddle Club, Blue Ribbon, those Thoroughbred ones, pretty near every one with horses!!
Oh yeah the Thoroughbred ones too!!! There wasn’t many of those…I think saddle club went to 63 or something? I still have that collection but am hesitant to reread, they are a little too small to read ![]()
I was totally the horse-girl dork too! LOVED the Black Stallion! And all of Margeurite Henry’s books…anything horsey, basically.
I had half the winners of the Kentucky Derby memorized for a while…
Cal. State University at Pomona, which was local to me, has an Arabian Horse program (The land for the campus came as a grant from WK Kellogg–as in Kellogg-brand cereal–and he collected and bred Arabians from all over the world. He left the state of California the land with the stipulation that it be used for a school campus, and that the Arabian ranch be maintained–how cool is that?!). I used to go EVERY Sunday as a kid (it was like my version of church, I guess!), and take POUNDS of carrots, all chopped up, and visit every single horse. I’d teach their prize-winning dressage horses dumb tricks, like how to nod their heads “yes” for a carrot…
The students doing barn-chores (who looked very old and intimidating to me when I was 10!) would sort of roll their eyes and let me do my thing…
So, yeah, I’m totally with you!

I was the same way at school as a kid, my name was actually “Pony Girl” all of junior high. EVERYTHING in my room was horses, my wall was covered top to bottom with pics of horses.
I loved and still love, any horse books. I have about 100 Saddle Club books that I’m saving to give my daughter if I ever have one. I love all the Marguerite Henri books (Justin Morgan being my fave cuz my horse is a Morgan). I love the Black Beauty movie. I cry EVERY time I watch it and I can recite every word by heart (I’ve been watching it regularly for over 10 years now!).
