I’ve had my bunny for about 2 months now. He recently started drinking LOTS more water, and peeing lots and lots more (in the litterbox). other than that, he eats and behaves normally. Do you think that this change is normal?

If there is any chance you are just noticing it more now, perhaps because you switched litters or started watching more careful, then no worries. However when any animal suddenly changes a behavior like that it may very well indicate something is wrong. Diabetes is often associated with increased thirst and urination.

To be safe I’d suggest taking him in for workup by a good rabbit vet. Another member recently went through this, and it did turn out to be nothing, just a rabbit who did drink alot-but I don’t believe he suddenly changed and started doing that. I believe he was always like that. I’m sure they’ll see this and share about their experience though,

          Keep us posted!!

I know that at the rabbit rescue I volunteered for that rabbits would drink more while getting used to their new surroundings. Sometimes it was due to a past issue of not having enough, sometimes it was due to the fact that they were getting more fiber in their diet than they were used to and so drinking more water was fine. But like Kokaneeandkahlua said if this is something that really has suddenly changed then it’s best to get a vet to check it out.

Also, at this point, it’s a good idea to get your bunny checked out anyway – just a healthy check-up as well to establish him with a vet. It’s important to have rabbit savvy vet that you trust so in case of any illness, you have a place to go. Especially since rabbits can hide illness, and can go downhill very quickly – you have to act fast when they get sick, and so it’s best to have a vet in place before that happens.

like KokaneeandKalhlua mentioned, another member has gone thru this where her bunny was drinking (i believe) 48 oz of water per day. that’s one and a half BIG water bottles! during her ordeal, we found out that the normal range for a healthy bunny of average weight is betw/ 2 and 4 oz a day. do you know how much he is drinking? i think if it’s within that range or a little bit higher than it’s probably nothing to worry about. where is he from, what do you know about his previous living conditions?  you need to take his diet into consideration…

i also recommend taking him into the vet for a healthy bunny check-up. it’s good for the new vet to get to know him early on, and this way you will have a vet in case of an emergency. if you need any help locating a rabbit savvy vet, please let us know.
