I have just spent about three hours carving our pumpkin using the Bunnicula stencil while wincing every time I had to use my right thumb, as I got a lovely hay splinter in it when I fed the bunnies this morning.

What IS it with hay? All I do is try to pull it out of the bag and YEOWCH! At least a one inch shard goes FLAT (not straight in-which probably would’ve been worse, I’m sure) into the pad of my thumb about 1/4 inch under the skin. And of course the only part of it that was sticking out of the entrance wound broke off and I had to deal with it being in there all day. I think if I hadn’t carved the pumpkin the skin wouldn’t have gotten soft enough to poke it out with a needle tonight.

Ow. I hate hay. It’s days like this that make me wish the buns would eat those hay cubes instead.

Ouch ouch ouch, don’t u with the buns could just open the bins and feed themselves in a clean and efficient manner!
Haha, so you have lovely soft orange hands?

lolz…Yah, for awhile there! (ewww) The thing that bugs me about pumpkin carving is that the snot on the inside makes my hands itch. Does that happen to anyone else?
And my bunnies didn’t appreciate the pieces of pumpkin I gave them to eat. I was looking forward to giving them a treat too.

I get whole bales of hay from my shelter – they come from a local farm.
So, the hay also has a few other things from the field mixed in – you know, like THISTLES!
              Ouch, ouch, ouch.

hay splinters…I can relate. I’ve spent a weekend every summer for the past 10 years haying in the fields and storing hundreds of bales in the loft for my horse. I get many a hay splinter! They are especially ouchy when they get under the nail. Ow!!!!!

Fortunetly, though I’ve never gotten one from my rabbit’s hay.

Even though I keep the fresh hay in a bin, I hate the splinters and the mess.  I thought about making bundles about the size of big, big handfuls and tying them with jute, but then I realized that even though it sounds easy to just grab a “bundle” and put it in the cage that it would probably be horribly time consuming to make the bundles.

Teehee…I hear you Katnip! But it would keep the bunnies busy, eh? ^_^

Ohgosh, I couldn’t imagine having to do this kind of work for a horse. I am beat to a pulp just taking care of the bunnies’ hay needs! 0_o

                    Oogh….thistles…. >_< Great for Eeyore maybe, but…. 0_o

                      OUCH!!!!!!

that’s never happened to me… (KNOCK ON WOOD!) that sounds awful…

the worse bunny-related injuries i’ve gotten (besides bites) were sore fingers from zipties. once you’ve pulled about a thousand of them, your thumbs get very sensitive…

ooouchy!  that hasn’t happened to me (yet).  i get farm hay too so i’m pretty careful about how i pull the stuff apart being that i fear what else may be bundled up inside.  eek.  i thought of bundling it in smaller ‘handfuls’ too but it’s just too much hassle & too messy.  i end up taking out a flake at a time & sticking the whole flake in a bucket that i keep in the girls room.  i was leaving the whole bucket out for who ever was on fre roam time to climb into & feast on….. until i realized they jump i & use it as a toilet

Oh that chaps my hide, to put fresh, lovely hay in a container of any kind and find the bun has gone straight in and soiled it beyond consumption! >_<

I think I may have to use gloves of some kind to keep from getting these. Every time I even sweep up used hay on the floor of the pens, i wind up getting poked. It’s no fun.

My thumbs are in bad shape for months now just from opening and closing the pen doors. The ones I have snap into place and have to be pulled out from under the other bars to be opened, you know? Well I’m getting carpal tunnel in my thumb from having to open and shut those all the time. ~_~

I almost had a bunny bite last night….or I should say a nibble. Because in my shirt this morning I noticed a dark spot and, since my eyes are crap I thought, “What the heck did I eat that got stuck to it?” Then I scratched at it and realized that SOMEONE (eyes Fiver suspiciously) had ventilated it for me. <.<

I was grooming HB the other day and he got mad dug on me and pulled on my shirt.  Well I did not notice he chewed a quarter sized hole in my shorts  til I put them on yesterday after washing everything.

HE is enjoying making holes in his special bunny towel too. I am happy he hasn’t dumped the hay all over since he has taken the newspaper out of his litterbox and chewed it up.  Wonder what it is going to look like in there tomorrow.

But nope no hay splinters  and hopefully none to come. ouch.

I have to take an aside here, how do you folks who give towels to your bunnies to chew keep them from swallowing long threads and strings off of them? Every towel (and I’ve tried quite a few kinds) I’ve ever used with my bunnies get stringy torn threads coming out of them the minute they begin munching and Pip almost choked on one about a month ago when I’d put a towel on top of her pen for some shade. I come in to see her with her head pointed straight up and her trying to swallow something, I realized what it was right away and pulled the towel off the pen, this brought the thread right out of her throat. But it scared me to death! 0_o

I don’t use towels. The threads would be way too tempting to Bindi and Storm. I use cotton baby blankets. No holes yet. Just peed on. Stormy likes to bunch it up and throw it in the potty.

Hm…well I have some polar fleece lying around I’m not using for anything. I suppose I could give them that instead. ^_^
