Well my room is very cramped as it is, and adding another cage for awhile is going to be very interesting. Im sure ill stub my toes twice as much as i do now lol. Well anyway, my question is do the two need to be within smelling distance? I know they have to see each other in their cages for bonding, but do they have to be real close?  Would it still work the same if they were about 3 feet apart? The reason i ask is because of Hammers cage being a cage and not a pen. The new bun will have a pen. But if you remember Hammers cage, its wood and wire and i can only open it from the front doors, which swing open really far. If I put the pen directly in front of Hammer then id have to move the pen several times a day to get to Hammer. Which i will do if i absolutely have to, but of course would really really not prefer.  Help?

O and should i try and rearrange my room a little? Thats where they will both be, and it will be where they have run time too. Just so Hammer wont get mad that he smells another bun in HIS run space?

i don’t think they have to be very close at first, but you will eventually want them next to each other. when you get the new bun, you will need to start switching cages every night, so keep that in mind as well. switching cages will get them used to each other’s scent and prevent them from becoming territorial of their spaces.

if you could arrange your room where they would be right next to each other (at least 3 inches apart at first), i think that would be beneficial.

O boy.. this will be a major pain. They cant be next to each other because of Hammers cage. They wouldnt be able to see each other that way. Ill post a pic of the cage so you all understand. So now im thinking that the other cage will have to be one of the dog’s crates. That way i can slide it out of the way. Instead of picking it up every time and rearranging it.

what if you divided hammers cage in half for a bit with nic cubes or something? would that work?

what if you removed the cage altogether, built a temporary double pen or double condo out of NIC grids (or got an xpen and divided it) and housed them in that for now? you could reintroduce them to the (thoroughly disinfected) cage later on once bonded.

If i divided the cage then only one of them could go up to all the levels.
I think ill try that Beka, as long as the nic cubes get here in time. Thanks!
