Hey folks!  Sorry it’s been a while, but the business has been keeping me very busy.  I took Sammy and Susie to the vet yesterday for their first checkup at Ponti Animal Hospital in Otis Orchards, Washington.  Friendly and informed staff there, nice people.

The buns were NOT fans of the ride in the car as Susie “cecaled” all over her butt and Sammy sprayed in the box and on his sister.  Once we got there, they calmed down a lot and while waiting I cleaned them up with a little warm water and some paper towels.

The good news is that they both got a clean bill of health!  They’re just over 4 months, Sammy is 4 lb 8 oz and Susie is 4 lbs, 6 oz which is funny because Sammy looks much bigger.  The Vet Assistant was very rabbit savvy and said we’re doing fantastic and keep it up.  She was surprised at both buns we so well behaved and how they both jumped back onto my lap and snuggled when she let them go.

I asked about the anesthesia and if they used Isoflourene and they said they did.  The vet said to fast Sammy for a few hours prior which bothered me and I told him that everything I’ve heard otherwise says not to.  His assistant agreed with me and said her last vet never fasted.  He said it had more to do with the “depth of the anesthesia” than anything so I said ok but I didn’t fast him at all.

So Susie needs to wait another month or so before her spay since she’s small, but this morning I took Sammy in for his neuter.  I disinfected the whole cage and litter pans so everything will be nice and clean when he gets home.  I got the call an hour ago that Sammy was in recovery and he did just fine!   YAY!  I call them in 45 minutes to go pick him up, no overnight.  I’ll let you all know how he’s doing!

That’s great that you found a good vet that you are happy with.

As for the fasting some vets will fast them a few hours before the surgery to make sure they don’t have anything in their mouths before they put them under anaesthesia and well that’s not really fasting. I think it’s more the rule not to fast them overnight like they do with cats and dogs.

Well, my little buddy is home and sedate and sleeping comfortably in his litter.  He ate a few pieces of parsley and timothy hay and went right for his water bottle.  In otherwords, he’s Neuteriffic!

Hi Beka…thanks! Sammy is better this morning. Still a bit more quiet than normal (not that I blame him…lol), but knowing that that is sometimes a sign of pain, I gave him his daily dose of Metacam just in case and he does seem better. He’s been eating and drinking from his bottle, though smaller quantities than normal and today he had some wet veggies, so we’re on the right track. I let his sister Susie in the top section of the condo with him for comfort and support overnight, but I took her out this morning. She took great care of him, grooming him and staying beside him, and it was so sweet to watch. However, with her in there with him, I can’t really tell how much food he’s eating and how much he’s peeing and pooping. He is, but I want to see how much and can’t with Susie in there.

One thing he’s still doing is rubbing his eyes a lot. He really wets his paws with his tongue and rubs his eyes still. I’m sure it’s a reaction to the procedure. Don’t they put something in the eye to protect it then rinse it with artificial tears or something like that? Anyone else see something similar?

yes they do, it’s some kind of ointment that keeps the eyes moist during surgery. you might have noticed his eyes looked wet or goopy yesteray. if it’s still real bad, you can take a damp, warm cloth to his eyes, or he’ll get it all cleaned off…

Awesome, thanks. I did notice there wasn’t any pee in the smaller litter pan I put in his upstairs condo since early this morning so today I took him out and put him in his regular pan and it was like Niagara Falls! Poor thing held it until he was in his old regular pan. I gotta give him all the credit for holding it!
